I'm in the process of soft modding my 360. One of the steps is to boot the pc from a usb drive. My motherboard is a Biostar Tforce 6100 s939. My usb drive is a Kingston Datatraveler 1gb. Using HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool, i loaded win98 files. I then went into bios and changed to boot from usb drive. When trying to boot, it gets stuck on the checking dmi status

Leave the USB stick connected and then go into the BIOS and see if it shows up as a hard drive, if so change the boot order so that it gets first dibs at booting.

On some motherboards USB sticks will show up as removable hard drives in the BIOS.

If it's simply hanging when trying to boot from the USB device, there's something wrong with the boot loader on the USB device more than likely.
