can't boot from cd...

i recently bought and installed an Abit NF7-S and im having a problem, after it posts and says verifying dmi pool... it just goes to a black screen. Also, when i try and boot from a cd or floppy it doesnt work. it will either freeze halfway through or just do nothing at all. i am very confused.

specs
Athlon 1000
512mb kingston value ram
abit nf7-s v2
seagate 40gb hdd
antec smart power 300w psu

Ok, I've been really busy since then and i am now starting to work on it again. I can see how the boot sector could be bad, but why would it do that on both hdds and why would it do it when trying to boot from cd? I'm in the process of reformatting my primary hdd (I put it in my dad's computer) now and ill try it out when its done.

Edit: when trying to boot from my secondary hdd, it said DISK BOOT FAILURE..., and that is farther then I got before. It still wont boot from cd though...

Update: Well, I got it all formatted, put it in and tried booting from cd, and it still won't boot from cd. When I try booting from the hdd, it says NTLDR is missing press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart. I'm assuming i get this message because there is no OS installed on the hdd.

ive tried a bunch of stuff and nothing seems to be working :( , so i thought i would ask here since it is a computer based forum.
 
The fact that it says NTLDR is missing makes perfect sense for a hard drive that was formatted in a windows xp computer. Your problem with booting from cd, however, is odd.

I think that you may have mobo troubles if you are unable to boot from any IDE device. It might be time to RMA if you can't even get it to boot off a floppy because, if all of your above statements are to be believed, it's not a hard drive, CD-ROM drive, CD, floppy drive, or floppy disk error.
 
Goto www.memtest.org and download the floppy creator...then boot to it and test your memory. If you memory passes, pull all PCI devices out of the computer and try booting to CD again. Run a HDD diag from seagates site as well. I assume you have the correct boot order in the bios and the bios is seeing your components. Also, I assume your jumpers are all set correctly. If you have another PSU, try it with that (wouldn't think a smartpower would be bad, but it is possible). Look at your processor...make sure the core is intact. If you are still having this issue after you do all this, you might have a bad mainboard. Good luck.

Also, maybe try swapping out IDE cables...again..unlikely but possible

EDIT: The reason I'm telling you to do all this is due to the fact that this is an issue where it's hard to conclude what the issue is. You pretty much have to do a process of elimination.
 
it will boot from floppy, but when i choose to start from cd(win 98 startup disk) itll list a few drivers and aspi managers then itll do nothing... im really confused :confused:
 
If it will boot from the floppy, you should definitely run memtest86. After you download it, it will build a floppy for you that tests your RAM.
 
you sure the nf7-s was made to run with a processor that old? i know my asus board warns against running processors in it that are under 1ghz. something to think about...
 
Check that all your jumpers are set on the drives. Set up your slave and master for both Hard drives and the CD drives. And make sure that everything is set up in the BIOS, and the mobo connections themselves.
 
hmm i cant even get into memtest, it goes to a blue screen that flashes on in the middle very quickly. i tested the floppy in a different computer and it worked. now im thinking its the processor because i pulled it out of a system that had a psu failure and screwed up the motherboard...

that would def be something to worry about... got any friends with an athlon xp or something? if not, an older one (2000+, something like that) can be had for like 30 bucks around here, check out the FSFT forums. not only might it fix your problem, but it would be a great upgrade
 
that probably also is the reason the MSI motherboard i tried didnt work, o well
 
borrowing a friend's duron 750 and it works :D thanks for all the help...this just has to last until december
