I built a brand new machine for my dad but I wanted to use the same HD. I decided that it would be better to format the drive and start clean, so I bought an enclosure, took it to my PC to try to back up the files but it doesn't show it in 'My Computer'. I looked at the 'Safely remove hardware' and the drive is there.

It is an 80GB WD PATA HD.

Any suggestions as to how I can access the drive?I can't afford to lose some of the stuff in the drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, the drive has four users, none had passwords, and it was running Windows XP Home.

I'm far from a hardware master but i dont know if its going to work right if you have it along side another O/S - it's not immediatly going to be recognized because of it not being formated correctly..... maybe you could pop it in as your primary and burn the important files to cd......

Hope this helps some - good luck - John-Michael

If you're running XP Pro, you can try to see if Disk Management can see the drive

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Storage->Disk Management

What they said. The drive has to be formatted to be seen in My Computer.

NO! The drive does NOT need to be formatted 1st... Check to see if it shows up in Disk Management within Computer management You may just need to verify the disk signature before it's available. Do your research, THEN get desparate :D

Doesn't show up there at all. I got a little desparate so I downloaded a live copy of SUSE 9.3 DVD edition. Got the thing up and running so lo and behold I am able to see the drive and all the files (Thank You Linus)! Too bad that I can't copy anything to another drive even though that I am logged in under "root".

It doesn't show up at all in Disk Management? I know sometimes with enclosures they don't get assigned drive letters and you have to manually assign it yourself. What enclosure are you using? And does it show up perfectly fine in Device Manager?

if its not showing up in disk management
just reinstall it internally

and the short way to disk management
start > run > (type) diskmgmt.msc

get it recognized then

disable simple file sharing and take ownership of files and folders
if its being accessed from a different computer
ntfs permissions
