Hi, I am about to pull the trigger on a Canon t1i. I'm going to keep the kit lens for awhile, but I was thinking about upgrading to a nicer lens within a month or so. What would be the best lens to add to a new collection first? I was thinking about the 50mm 1.8f. Also, what is the best Canon lens for video? Money is tight, so the lower the price, the better.

Spend some time with the kit lens first and figure out what it is that you like to shoot and what focal range it's not satisfying and then go from there. The 50mm f/1.8 is a decent lens for the price, but it's not for everyone. Slow to focus, hunts in low light, and the build quality leaves something to be desired. Also, primes are not for everyone. Set your lens at 50mm for a few days and see how you like the focal length. You may realize foot zooming is not for you regardless of how attractive f/1.8 sounds.

Agreed. You need to shoot a while to see what your needs are. Then you can make a more informed decision.
