Canon Rebel T2i

I saw it earlier, but have to read their write-up yet and download some full sized samples images they took.

Doesn't seem like a huge upgrade for existing T1i owners, but it is still a significant upgrade from older models. The 1080p/30, 1080p/24, and 720p/60 video modes are nice but I don't see big upgrades anywhere else.

If this is really a *replacement* for the T1i then you should see the older models go on clearance pretty soon, there'll be some great deals there. I wonder if they'll just bump the XS off of the current Rebel lineup and move the XSi down to the entry-level position though.

The 19-point, all cross-type AF on the 7D is the killer feature that has me looking to upgrade in that direction; It's too bad they didn't add that to the T2i.

The Rebel's getting shuffled a bit: The T1i is sliding down to be the new mid-entry-level, while the XSi is going away, and the XS sticks around as the bottom of the barrel DSLR.

I was thinking about trying to get an xsi since I've heard kind of meh reviews about the video recording and im not really looking for a camcorder. Hopefully this will have a lot of people start selling them and i can get a good second hand deal for my first dslr

Looks like there are a few ergonomic changes as well. Still not a huge upgrade if you already own a T1i, but it might be a nice upgrade from something a little older:

Something about the first guy in the video makes me want to reach into the screen and punch him, lol.

I've been looking pretty hard at the 50d for my first DSLR, but this might be a better choice. Wish it came with the 28-135mm lens that the 50d has included with it as an option.

I know some will disagree with me but 28mm (45mm effective on a 1.6X crop body) is not really wide enough in a lot of indoor situations; I think you'd find yourself backing into walls a lot while trying to frame groups of people in your shots. The 28-135 was really meant as a a walk-around lens for full-frame bodies like the 5D.

You can usually find bundle deals where they'll throw in a 55-250mm IS telephoto lens for an extra ~$200 to compliment the usual 17-85mm kit lens. It is definitely worth it, you'll end up with a much more useful range. The 55-250mm will take over right at the focal range where the 17-85 gets slow & soft. :)

Either way the 50D and T2i are both great cameras, I'm sure you'd be very happy with either one!

Thanks for the advice on those lens configurations. I've not done any *real* photography since the old Canon AE-1 and Olymplus OM-G cameras I had back in the mid to late 80's so I've got tons of research and catching up to do. I'm seriously thinking about a trip to the Redwoods this Summer and wanted to get me a decent camera to capture the memories with, but there is a budget involved. I'll have to look into that other lens you mentioned as well. ;)

That sucks for people looking to get their first slr. The xsi is much better than the xs according to everything I've seen.
