What the hell is wrong with Canon that they can't provide downloadable manuals on their website?

Here's what I tried:

1) Click on your link
2) Select "EOS (SLR) Camera Systems" in the [1] box
3) Select "Flashes" in the [2] box
4) Select "Speedlite 550EX" in the [3] box

Result: "No Drivers Available". No manuals area available, either.

NB: it doesn't matter which flash model you select in Step #4. Same result for any lens in the EF line; you can't get a manual, though you might find a link to a brochure.

Yeah, I already found that. While it answered my question, it's not exactly printable or downloadable. They're all JPG files, poorly scanned, not searchable, and so on.

I'm trying to figure out why Canon doesn't make the manuals available themselves; why do I have to go get an illegal copy of the manual from some third party site? Why can't I have a nice neat PDF file like I get for practically any other product I own?
