Canon EOS 10D Lens Help

I just purchased a Canon EOS 10D for a song at a local pawn shop. This is the camera body only, no lens.

Before I go sink $200 plus in to a quality lens for this camera, I would like to purchase the most basic lens possible at a low price point in order to properly learn how to take good shots with a DSLR camera.

My local Craigslist has a Canon Rebel G 35MM camera with a 35-80 lens for only $40.

Because this camera uses the EOS lens system, can I remove the lens from the 35mm camera and use it on my DSLR?

I am open to alternate suggestions for obtaining a cheap lens as well.

Following doesn't work. Was a bad recommendation.
I'd recommend an 18-55mm. 35mm is pretty restrictive. Some people will say that it is just fine, but there are often cases where you can't back up and farther.

On my craigslist there is this ad for the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS for $95. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/pho/2870062135.html This lens has image stabilization which can come in handy also.

I'm a Nikon user so I can't speak to the compatibility question.

That's a nice lens, but this Canon can only mount EF, not EF-S lenses. Thanks for the input. Any cheap vintage lenses (for other platforms) in that range?

Honestly why would you want to spend $200 for a 10D? For around that you prob could pick up a XT or XTi for around the same amount... I sold my XT and XTi for around $250.....

I purchased the body for $75. I'm just looking to use this device as a starter until I move to something better, but I'll do some looking at the XT.

Okay, $75 is not too bad.... I would say the 18-55 IS (mentioned earlier) would be a decent choice.... and maybe a 50mm f/1.8 for lowlight....

Hmm. That is unfortunate. I'm going to edit my post above so that it is obvious it is a bad recommendation.:( Doesn't look like there are any cheap wide lenses for EF mount.

As long as the lens works then you should be able to have fun with anything.

Here is an interesting article on modifying the 18-55 EF-S to EF: http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/efs-10d.html

I would look at third party glass, as some of their zooms should be able to mount.

I scored one Minolta MC 80-200mm lens, a Pentax K mount 28mm lens, and a K mount macro lens all for $20 on craigslist. Thanks for the help guys; these work great with adapter plates on my EOS 10D.

I take that you can only manual focus with the adapter. Right? Still I love shooting totally manual, it makes it so much more fun than auto! Btw that was a pretty good deal on three lens, they might not be canon L glass but I am sure they will be great starting out.

Yes, it is manual-only. Unfortunately the aperture does not work in the macro lens for some reason. The wheel turns but the blades of the iris do not move.

Yes, that happens to be a problem with older lens the oil dries out and turns sticky causing them to jamb.

you can get some used lenses off adorama's used section, they state which lenses are only for film, but sometimes they make a mistake (happened to me once where I got a film only lens but I just returned it for a refund) they start at about $50 and go up from there
