I've had and sold an A70 model in the past year. I was very happy with it but after reading the review of the A70 on dpreview.com, it's considered an inexpensive alternative to the G1. Well I was thinking of getting another A70 for my wife here in the next month or so but I can easily get a G1 now for almost $100 less than I first got my A70 for. Would this be a better buy?

the question is if the A70 you are going to buy will cost less than the G1 you are going to buy. That said, the A70 is a better camera for a few reasons -- one is that the sensor is much larger than the sensor on the G1...therefore your shots are going to be inherently higher quality even at the same megapixel size. The A70 uses an RGB filter, which is what any high end dSLR and quality point shoot cameras will use...in fact, any digital camera these days... the G1 uses a modified version of a CMYK filter, that includes green -- that's pretty outdated but the results tend to be pretty similar across filters.

The A70 has both a longer minimum shutter time and a shorter maximum shutter time -- in other words you'll be able to take better NIGHT and SPORTS shots on the A70 than on the G1.

You can take much longer movie clips with the A70 (3 minutes vs 15 sec on the G1).

In support of the G1, it has a larger LCD display, and supports RAW format. The G1 runs on a native rechargable battery, the A70 uses AA batteries, which can be rechargable if you get those.

Good luck!

Check out www.dpreview.com for a review of each of these cams.

if any of these features are important to you, I'd suggest the A70. If not, I'd still suggest the A70 ..

Or try an A75, or A80 :) Nice lil upgrades there... it seems like Canon has cleared up some of the poor redeye as it's the thing I hate most about my S230.
