canon 400d

40d is bloody expensive. double the cost of a 400d

Uh huh. But it's definitely a much better quality camera. Like I said to the OP. Stick with the 400D/XTi.

I had the Rebel XT, my next option for an upgrade was not going to be an XTi, and surely wasn't going to be an XSi. That leaves me with buying a 30D for just a slight step up from the XT, or the 40D. Which is a great step up.

Unfortunately, the A-1 is FD mount and you cannot use any of it's lenses on an EF mount camera.

I picked up a couple of decent (spelled cheap) lenses for my Canon D rebel (300) for $150 with a leather bag, polarizing and uv filter (lenses listed in sig)

The thing about a DSLR is take it and play, do not think you are going to be Art Wolfe any time soon, set the thing on various manual settings and sstart tweaking - see what effect it has on pics - its digital, stuff a 4GB and you will have a good idea how the camera works. DPReview is a great site, the photo links post here at [H] is a great source for even more info. Good luck!

Keep your eye out in the next few weeks as the XSI/450D/KissX2 should be releasing shortly and we will see the prices of the others drop slightly. If you are still looking at getting a DSLR you might want to think of investing in a used 20D or 30D. They are the much larger "prosumer" bodies and I can tell you first hand that they make the XTi/XT feel like plastic toys in your hands. The 20D will go for about the same price and an XT maybe higher in some cases and the 30D will got for about the same as the XTi, grant these are both USED pricing. Still very good and like Raging said, best thing to do is get one and start playing with it. I am a few months away from being able to get mine so for the time being I am playing with a Nikon EM 35mm and my A560 P&S. Got to start somewhere
