Cannot reliably create Eyefinity group

First, the config:
  • 2 x Sapphire reference 7970s
  • 1 x MSI Lightning 7970 with 4 mini-DP ports
  • 3 x Samsung S27A750D, connected by DP (so no adapters, just straight-through DP to DP from the MSI card)
  • Umpteenth install of Win 7 pro
  • Almost every 12.x series driver imaginable. Currently working with latest 9.00 beta drivers on a fresh install of Win 7.
The Problem
I've re-installed my OS roughly a half dozen times in the last few months as I experiment with various configs, and this one issue continually haunts me. When I first install Catalyst, I am able to create a 3x1 landscape Eyefinity group as normal. The issue I am regularly having is that at some point during my system build process, switching into Eyefinity no longer works. When I select "Create Eyefinity group" in CCC, it doesn't ask me for the primary monitor and skips straight to the layout. It then "creates" the group, meaning that it just switches to duplicate the display on all 3 monitors. Switching back to extended works fine. I've experienced this issue now across at least 4 builds of Win 7 and what has to be nearly a dozen different driver revs. Just for fun, here's what my driver install folder looks like today.

Some other factors:
  • Happens with Crossfire enabled for 3 GPUs, 2 GPUs, or disabled
  • When it's working, everything is awesome. No tearing, and HD3D+Eyefinity works too.
  • I can usually make it work again with ATI Uninstaller. Using the normal uninstall process + reinstall won't do it. Driver Sweeper won't do it. I don't like ATI Uninstaller as it's a little aggressive, and I have reason to believe it may be the source of other, unrelated issues I have been experiencing.
  • System is otherwise stable. I've underclocked both CPU and RAM, and the video cards are currently running at stock clocks and the temps on everything look fine.
 
I have the exact same 3 monitors, running an asus CUII 7970 with 4 DP and a reference MSI 7970 in crossfire....and running the same beta drivers.

I too suffer from the same horrible eyefinity grouping nightmare every time I boot my machine.

However, I have finally mastered the AMD CCC eyefinity wack-a-mole game. I can successfully & consistently get eyefinity synced in two cycles lol. First, I make sure all displays are in extended mode. Then tell it to create group with middle display as the primary, select 3x1 which leads to a broken group. Second, disable that group, extend all displays again, then select the third display as primary, select 3x1 and walla....eyefinity goodness. If it doesn't sync, rinse and repeat the process as many times as necessary (for me it only usually takes two tries).
 
Holy crap that did it dude! Bouncing back and forth from extended finally gave me back the first prompt (the primary screen), which still didn't work, but then finally did when selecting one of the other monitors as the primary.

Jesus Christ these drivers are terrible. Still, you are awesome - thanks for the help!

Ya no prob. How are you liking trifire versus crossfire with the new drivers? Im debating going tri or quadfire.

Also, I HOPE TO GOD YOUR A PREMIUM BF3 MEMBER... I hate to think I helped somebody that wasnt....

The new drivers have made it so that I can enable trifire in games that previously only supported crossfire which is nice. I still have a number of titles that just won't work in any crossfire configuration that I've had working fine on previous builds, so it's still wildly inconsistent.

And I don't own BF3, premium or otherwise :(

Well shit, now I am having this problem and the Eyefinity whack-a-mole is not work.

This worked perfectly fine up until today when I turned my PC on. It was in Extend mode instead of Eyefinity. No big deal, I can just enable the Eyefinity group again right?!? NOPE, not anytime I get Eyefinity enabled I have three duplicated displays.
 
I have two DP and 1 DVI and I found out if I boot with my DVI monitor turned on then turn on the DP monitors after Windows is booted, I have better luck. It may be something similar if all the connections are DP, but I'm not sure.
 
I've noticed that the required voodoo dance has changed with 12.11b4. I'm currently running Win8 and now it will actually enable eyefintiy across the 3 monitors, but do so in 1920x480 only (?)

I still haven't figured out the exact sequence, I've just found that trying it, disabling it, going into extended, doing a little dance with my left leg, squinting at it, and then re-enabling sometimes works. If that doesn't work try using your right leg.

Eventually I have been able to get it to work. I've noticed that presets are sometimes working for me now too, so once I do get it working I can save it to a preset, and it might even be able to apply that preset sometime in the future.
 
if eyefinity wont enable properly i have found that i must set the resolution in windows first so each screen is 1920x1080 otherwise i get the same 1920x480... also once in windiws it allowed me to set it to 5760x1080. i was amazed to say the least!
 
Sadly, what you're describing is why I'm still using the original 79xx drivers. I would just get fed up with the failures and worse if I put the system to sleep...

Reading folks having better luck through repetition and brute force... I can't decide if it's worth the trouble.




And oh yeah, I'm Premium, damnit.
 
I eventually got mine working by repeatedly trying it. I tried every damn voodoo fix i could find online, then it started working for no reason when i tried to enable it normally. Now I am stuck in Eyefinity since I have zero confidence I will be able to enable it again if I turn it off.

Fixing this doesn't appear to be a priority for AMD. I've had these problems off and on since Eyefinity first launched. On multiple computers, different motherboards, and different versions of Windows. No one trying to enable Eyefinity wants a single monitor disay duplicated on three monitors, it shouldn't even be possible to fail like this.
 
Well, I'm on Beta6 and in Eyefinity right now... so I expect it's just a matter of minutes before shit explodes.

If you want to test it, use Windows Key+P a few time to go from Extended to Duplicate mode, use Sleep, setup Profiles, then power off the PC with Eyefinity enabled and disabled a few times each. :)

Once you are confident it's all working, Eyefinity will break within a week. :p

UPDATE: Alright fuck this, the ghost of ATI must be watching me. Just got the computer out and sleep and it was back to duplicating displays. Tried to setup the Display Group again, same problem:

Do those drivers retards at AMD even have a concept of what people are trying to do when they setup an Eyefinity Display Group?!?

Yeah, it didn't make it back from sleep, but I got it back within a couple cycles.

I think part of the issue is Displayport-related, which is a bummer as I think it's the best of the means to connect a monitor otherwise.

Displayport or not, AMD should be putting a lot more effort into resolving these issues. I don't know anyone using Eyefinity that hasn't run into issues with this stuff at various points in time. Heck I managed to go ~4 months straight without an issue over the summer.

I was able to get mine working again yesterday after thre 6:35PM post. This morning when i woke up the Eyefinity IDisplay Group was broken again. Tonight I will just disable it and pretend I didn't specifically buy an AMD video card + get three matching monitors for a feature that doesn't work.

Well, I never had issues with the 79xx release drivers. Those were stable and capable and never gave me Eyefinity or other issues. But after playing a little BF3 on the new drivers, I'll accept the frustration in the short term (for me).
 
Well I've had a huge development in the 12.11 beta drivers in that profiles actually appear to be working for me now, across 3 different installs of Win8 on a quadfire 7970 stack.

Bunch of other shit is still horribly broken, and Eyefinity is still a PITA to get working the first time, but once I got it I have successfully been able to create a profile and then switch into and out of it like it was supposed to do in the first place.
 
I should also note that if you install HyrdaVision and enable Hydra Grid, you can get something that approximately resembles your normal window management. The aero mouse shortcuts don't work, and a bunch of other stuff behaves in a non-standard manner, but it's close enough to live with if you're terrified of switching out of a working Eyefintiy config. I did this myself for most of this year and it's acceptable if not ideal.

Alright with the 12.11 Beta 6 drivers, I was able to enable Eyefinity with nothing crazy happening, and I've managed to sleep/wake the computer 5 times without a problem occurring. Looking good so far, I will hold my breath and see how it goes...
