cannot pinpoint problem

I've got a strange problem that I can't get figured out on my own. I recently built a new machine, and since the first install I've had corrupted files, crc errors etc with a lot of different of installs, extractions, etc.

400W Vantec Stealth PSU
2.53GHz P4 533fsb
abit it7-max2 v2.0 latest bios
corsair xms low latency 2700 512MB (2)
wd 80GB 8MB cache (2)
Plextor DVD+/-RW
ATI Radeon 9800XT

When I first installed XP, i was using one stick of pc2100 (512) and after i update to SP1, during the restart, i get a bsod. I mention this because it happened on the next 3 reinstalls. After a restart or two, all would be okay until I started to install programs. I would get CRC errors when trying to extract the temp files during installation. Some times I don't have any trouble at all. I ordered two new sticks of memory (mentioned above) thinking that was the problem. So I reinstalled windows with preinsatlled updates and everything went pretty smooth for the most part, but the same problems would pop up when trying to install various games (install from cd or mounted iso). Sometimes i could retry and it would finish, and other times I've skipped the files, and textures, menus, etc were missing from the installed game.. More recently (as in today) I downloaded the painkiller and sacred demo, both of which give me extraction/corruption errors. BUT I have ut2k4 demo and a few full games installed, which gave me no problems.
Should also mention that all of these things install OK using the exact same source on other machines on the network. Random reboots have been a problem too, with the video card crashing, but these problems haven't came up but maybe once since the last install

I'm thinking it is memory related. But I've tried two different brands. I've ran memtest86 and (forgot name) and both programs generate random errors. The first few times I booted into memtest, the screen was corrupt with garbage charaters. Only until I took dimm1 stick out, would it sucessfully run, but even then I would get random memory errors within both tests switching the sticks and slots every other way. I've also tried two different hdd's

ERROR:
Sacred Demo Setup
C:\Program Files\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred Demo\Pak\texture.pak
An error occured while trying to copy a file:
The source file is corrupted.

WinRAR Diagnostic message
..\JackDemoUS.zip: CRC failed in JackDemoUS.exe. The File is corrput

The cpu/mobo was bought used from a friend, who has been using it for a year with no problem. I buy the damn thing a month after the warranty is out and I dont know if its the memory, motherboard, what.. I need help... bad heh, I think i get it fixed and after a few weeks these sort of things start to happen....

Thanks

what type of BSOD? Unmountable_boot_volume?

Second thing you should try would be AVG or something.

Sounds like an IDE issue, could be ram though.

try copying files from differant IDE channels (for example, lets say your installing gallactic bugaloo fighter 3d, keep the cd rom you're installing from, and the hard drive on seperate ide channels)

Another thing to try is looking through your mobo manufacturers website and seeing if they list anything. Also try both drives.

wow thats a fast reply. I can't remember what the bsod was during the win.update, but i've had the video card bsod on me a few times if that would be related at all.. doubt it.
This does happen with cd installations too, and both hdd's are on primary, dvd is on secondary. for grins i even tried new ide cables.. btw, you do bring up a good point. ive moved 200+ gigs across the network on both hdd's and every file copies over OK. i feel like this is only happening when something needs to be loaded into memory or copied to temp storage... any more ideas?

Yea it might copy over a network fine, but its not crossing ide channels.

Have you looked for bios updates? (driver updates to obviously)

still, as i said, ive tried crossing ide channels. being a typical setup, my hdd's are primary, dvd is secondary. during the last xp install, i actually got corrupt file error when it started copying /windows. that time it copied over after i hit retry.. installed with both hdd's as single drives (seperatly), and a maxtor hdd.
i've updated bios, drivers, even tried before/after mobo updates..
