Cannot make Linux LIve USB boot stick.

I'm trying to make a copy of a Linux Live CD and while I seem to be able to copy the CD into an ISO, throwing it onto a USB or SD (which was my goal) isn't working.

So for starters, I used Disk Utility in OSX Lion to create the ISO from the CD. From there I'm using DD in terminal to change it into an IMG file. But the next step is where it fails... I use DD again to thrown the IMG file onto the USB and or SD and although it says it completed successfully... any laptop I put the stick into says there is no valid OS to boot from.
Say my image is linuxCD.IMG. I'm using DD if=linuxCD.IMG of=/dev/disk1 BS=512k This command completes, and OSX can see all the files on the USB stick. All the files on the CD (hidden or not) are exactly the same as on the USB stick. I also have been trying this on a 2gb SD card as that was my initial goal with the same results, all the files are there. But for whatever reason no PC see's a vaild OS when I select the device to boot.

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong? There are no issues with this USB stick, I've actually tried 2 different sticks, and 1 SD card. I should also point out that I downloaded the exact same Linux Live ISO from the web and I'm getting the same problem. And I can successfully boot from the Live CD itself, so it's working OK.
