Cannot adjust system volume

Hi. I'm having kind of a weird audio problem, and I would really appreciate some input.

For some reason my system volume is turned all the way down and I am unable to change it. Under my sounds and audio devices properties the device volume section is greyed out so that I cannot change it. I'm using a Realtek AC97 Audio and it says under device status that "This device is working properly." Even in programs such as Power DVD whose volume controls change the system volume, it's stuck at 0% and it won't allow me to change it. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them, but it made no difference. I can change the device volume, just not the system volume, which basically leaves me with no audio. I'm running a Toshiba Notebook Model: A75-S226, with windows XP home edition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am out of ideas. Thanks in advance.
 
Have you checked with Toshiba for the usual suspects? Bios updates, new drivers etc? On a laptop that’s where I usually start.
