Looking at buying one of these little guys... Not huge into digital photography, and my grandad has an XTI should i need a bigger gun to shoot some pics... But what is the general consensus on this guy? I've read some reviews....but i would like to hear of some hands on experience so i can make sure this is what i want..... If you have any suggestions for a cam in the same price range that is better, id be more than willing to hear it out :) Looking for 300-350 tops... Thanks in advance

Jhon

the SD1000 and 750 don't have IS, so they're not replacements for the 700IS. I'd still wait till after PMA before buying anything though

Bought the SD700IS back in Oct. 06

Its a great little camera. The IS really works well and it is amazing the shots you can get in low light areas (nighttime indoors, etc.). I have been really impressed with it.

There is a new SD800IS but based on the reviews it has less zoom and the results are not always as good as the SD700IS even though it has more MP (lots of edge softness and distortion on the SD800 at wide angles). Here is one discussion on it:

BTW, it is actually my parents, I use a Canon Rebel 300D.

I would take the SD800, better ISO performance, and thats about all that matters for me. With the digic3 processor in it, it will have better low light performance, less delay between shots (which isn't much of an issue with the SD700) uses less battery.....and comes with a nifty and sometimes practical face recognition. Its all about what you expect from it, what demands you have to meet, and how much you're willing to fool around with photoshop. If you're an AUTO kinda person who mostly points and shoots......SD800 all the way.

And since the SD700 is discontinued you might be able to find it for a steal, but because the SD800 launched at a lower price they are usually about the same.

Get the SD800......unless you want to spend a tad more for the TX1. (not perfect....but looks to be a fantastic camera....need reviews once it launches any day now)

EDIT: and it doesn't zoom as much (140mm to 110) because it starts at 28mm. Which i would sacrifice a little zoom to actually be able to take pictures indoors, great landscapes, and MUCH better for traveling because you rarely have time to back up to frame a shot. Its all a personal preferance but i dont see a single reason to buy the SD700 over the SD800......i think the little things you lose, usually are for great gains.

The 800 is nice because you get a wider lens, which is very useful on a travel camera. On the downside the lens isn't as sharp because of the wide design, and high iso shots look worse than shots from the SD700 despite digic III.
