I'd l;ike to try and get a candy apple effect out of black. Is it possible? I was thinking about using an aluminum colored undercoat such as that found with metalcast kits. Why? I dunno, just something I thought of. I would call it Black Chrome. BTW, this is for a bike not a computer. I just figured I'd ask here because there are so many that paint so often.

Any tips, ideas or otherwise appreciated!
 
FYI there is already a "black chrome" ..........chrome can be made into different colors now by professionals :D but no paint is going to do that.
 
Any ideas on the cost of having a frame chromed?

BTW, Black Chrome is what I'd name the bike...not the paint style. But a great idea nonetheless. I'll have to check on the black chrome idea. Might be more durable than paint and definitely more unique. Worse case scenario...I'll go with metallic black and clearcoat the hell out of it.
 
It's a frame, screw the painting part. Paint scratches easily. Chroming will cost you at least $200 and probably more if it's colored (which very few people do yet)

Your best option is powdercoating which would be a very durable finish and looks as good as any paint you put on it. Probably $200 or more for that also.
 
you can base coat in a chunky silver metalic paint and then over coat with a translucent black, then clearcoat. translucent "candy" colors are just clear coat with pigment added. originally invented by the guys at House of Kolor. Translucent Black candy over silver metalic will make a very convincing black chrome. There are also plating techniques that will yield a true black chrome. Try google and put in Black Chrome for some ideas.
 
Great Ideas and tips. I'll have to look into this translucent black effect. The bike is a 1955 Schwinn Corvette cruiser. Because the original paint is no longer there I want to paint it something custom. Having a hot rod shop do it or plate it is out of my budget. That is why I want to do it myself. This will be a weekend cruiser bike so I won't be hitting the trrails or anything like that wih it. I considered powdercoating but that is also out of my budget.

I went to my local bike shop and he had a reproduction Stingray Apple Krate which was a deep candy red. I might also consider that color as well.

There is a paint shop down the road from me. I'll have to stop in there and chat with them.
