I work for a College IT Laptop Support Center to support all of the laptops students get when they enroll into college . We just got this Laptop into our shop yesterday and we're totally blown away by it.

We have seen everything from pepsi getting spilled in (what we refer to as "Pepsi Syndrome", to fire, to even a laptop that was in the flood in Pittsburg, but nothing like this.

This is "Pepsi Syndrome" #6. How you spill a hot candle in a laptop is beyond me. Amazingly it still boots up and works! She said that some of the keyboard keys fell off when she tried to clean it, but all that did was make it worse.

On the bright side, it has a nice strawberry smell to it.

That poor machine :(

Its owner should be forced to attend a training session about what not to have near a computer (nitroglycerin, candle wax, fudge)

What IBM model is it by the way?

My sister managed to spill a glass of wine in her laptop at college. She called me and said, "I just spilled some water in my laptop and the screen went black but it's still playing music." I told her to stop being retarded and unplug the damn thing.

After she tried to reboot it, the screen was always black and it failed to POST, so she mails it to me. I get it two days later and the thing is just foul with the stench of cheap red wine. It was completely dead of course, my sisters are so stupid....

I would have to say that that machine is pretty boned. The screen is half waxed now, and it kind of looks like it'd have to get replaced.

91% isopropyl alcohol...

i use it to clean alot of stuff

just pull each key off 1 at a time and clean them. either that or a knife/razor blade. Personally id start out with the knife then finish up with the alcohol...

i havent tried it on wax tho....i dont spill it on my computer

i think she was gettin a little too kinky with that candle there. ever see that ricky martin music video :p

Yea... that sucks big time. I don't think it's beyond being fixed though...

I mean if you could at least get most of the wax off of the LCD you should still be able to see the image (not perfect of course since i'm sure the hot wax damaged the screen, and the removal process would likely do even more damage...)

The keyboard could be replaced i'm thinking so that'd at least make the laptop usable... Now if the wax is actually on the mainboard... Who knows how long this laptop has to live...

depends WHERE on the motherboard the wax is...if its on a not so hot part..then no problem really...if its on a very hot part it would be a very bad thing....wax insulates pretty good..

Wow, I've spilled Pepsi and Bawls on my keyboard... but... who the fuck drinks candle wax?

At this point in time, we are calling it a total loss. It definelty needs a new LCD and keyboard. The keyboard for obvious reasons, The LCD, Becasue If you look at The first picture, you'll see the coloration difference. That's not wax on the screen but it's actually the screen itself. Apparently the wax got into it and did something where it discolored the LCD. We haven't even opened it up yet, So we have no idea what the inside looks like. Regardless IBM would never warantee it and everything that has wax on it would have to have it cleaned or replaced so it's a total loss from our point of view. It's probably going to live the rest of it's days as a "Hey Freshmen, don't do this or your gonna pay!" kind of visual helper for next year's class.

Someone asked what the model was. it's an IBM R51 laptop. The actual model number eludes me right now. Basicially it was a Celeron 1.2, 256MB, CDRW, 802.11G WinXP.

Just for the curious, Pepsi Syndrome 1 Through 5 was grape soda, Gatorade, Jack Danels, Flavored water, and Tea in that order. We also had another 3 walk in that had Beer, Beer and Sprite spilled in them, but they still worked fine. This is not counting the one that was in the flodded car in Pittsburg, we're still waiting for the two that were in the fire. they said they couldn't get them off the floor but were still hoping for avisual on those

You can remove wax with a hair blower and a cloth. the hair blower heats up the wax to a fluid and the cloth sucks it up, or the wax evaporates. If you ever spilled wax on cloth and heat it up with hot air, it goes away. Yu cant clean wax with alcohol, its a solid and alcohol dont have any efect on it, its like rubbing a candle and expecting it to dissapear.

Yeah, I asked about the model number. That's a pretty new laptop then, too bad. But I like the pictures. The LCD looks like it has some weird purple fire going on.

look, i'm not saying anything... but... i don't think she's using the candle for "light" in the dark, perhaps more to "set the mood" and what with the internet...

I guess candle wax is too much even for an IBM.

At least it's an old budget machine. It's proably more trouble then it's worth to fix up that thing, unless you can find the same thing on ebay with a dead mobo.

The really funny part about all this is that students are not supposed to have candles in the room due to fire regulations. Of course since it's a dry campus they shouldn't have Beer or Jack Daniells either :D

With the track record the students have had so far, I could probably make this a weekly event. Last week we had three broken LCD's come in at once about two hours apart. I would take some snapshots of the flood one but its not nearly as bad as this. It pretty much was a laptop that looked like it was in a duststorm.

I'm still waiting for a laptop to come in that breaks the 17068 ad-aware spyware record we set last year..

I think I know how it happened.

Boy meets girl, girl lights candles in room to make it more "romantic", Take it from there. I mean it is a college!

It's also because unlike water or beer, wax is not conductive. I'd imagine that the screen is toast from heat damage and/or some sort of volatile dye that ate the plastic cover of the screen.
