I installed Splinter Cell Double Agent, and it needs at least a 128mb video card with pixel shader 3.0

My Radeon x800 has shader 2.0. is there any way to upgrade to 3.0 without buying a new video card?

how do i know if it has shader 3.0? does it have to do with pixel pipelines (i'm looking on newegg, and it doesn't say anything about shader)

any cards from the 6xxx or 7xxx on nvidia, or the x1*** series from ati support sm3, although u will want atleast a 7600gs-gt, or a x1600xt+ to play it nicely, stay away from the 6200-6600, the x1300-x1400, or the 7300-7600gs

actually, the 6800gs is BETWEEN the 6800gt and ultra performance wise, and is a good agp card, although the 7600gt or 7900gs would kick its tail if u were to go pci-e

if his is a x800 vanilla, then it is below a 6800gt, so a 6800gs is an improvement

You're better off sticking with what you have until you can get a better system that takes PCI-E video cards or buy radeon 1950pro video card that uses AGP...

You can get them now for $300 retail at best buy but you might want to wait when they drop in price...

Isn't there 7800 series card for AGP, I seem to remember a friend of mine who had one. I don't know what they'd cost now though since the GF8 series is out now.

EDIT: ahh, here's one for 235.99 +shipping
BFG Geforce 7800GS 256MB GDDR3

there's also a mail-in-rebate, but I don't consider those when I'm doing price-comparisons.

I dion't know if you consider 235.99 cheap or not, but I paid almost $400 for my X1900XT-512 a few monhts ago. Which sadly I'm not getting to use anymore since I don't have a computer that's compatible with it anymore (iMac G3 350, ugh)

You'd almost be better off switching to a pci-e mobo now and getting a cheap pixel 3.0 card...

If you're going to waste $235 on a video card, wait for the 1950pro AGP... It will hurt the 7800gs...

Far as I know 7800gs isn't even all that faster than 7600gt in real world games...

thanks for all the help! I will probably wait and get a pci-e mobo, then a new video card.
