Can you overclock a mac? or a ibook even?

Well, there are quite a few Macs that can be overclocked..... However, with most of them, overclocking is a total pain in the ass and involves changing the arrangement of tiny surface-mount resistors (like with the old tray loading iMacs). It's pretty easy to overclock the Blue & White G3 towers, though. All you have to do, without going into too much detail, is pull off Apple's big jumper block and then just use individual jumpers in specific combinations to alter the clock of the CPU. You should be able to find some good info at this site: xlr8yourmac.com

oh in that case take it from me (I've used macs for the past 2.5 years) and don't get a mac

the positives dont begin to make up for the downsides

You keep asking the strangest questions about macs. Just buy the damn iBOOK! Short answer to the first part though is sometimes maybe. It's not generally worth it either.

As far as overclocking a notebook, are you kidding? Notebooks are thermonuclear devices already, don't mess with the delicate balance. Unless the model supports higher clock speeds you don't want to mess with it. And even then many laptops provide no way to actually overclock the processor anyway.

That's nice. Although since you have no idea what he intends to do with it...

why buy a mac?
there nothing but junk. AKA boat anchor or door stop
you would be much better off with a laptop from IBM or even the shit hole dell
IMO get a IBM they seem to be the best laptop you can buy
then again HP/Compaq are pretty good
just stay away from dell

get the iBook already!

you can't OC a notebook...are you nuts?
they run HOT...i can tell you've never used one...OCing a notebook would be suicide...unless you need an expensive space heater!:p

in all seriousness...get the iBook, you won't be dissappointed.

I'm gonna have to refer you to my previous post...

Or better yet! MOTIVATE! Explain your opinion, otherwise it is useless.

wow! thank you all knowing computer guru!

anything to back up your claims?

I think the man knows what he wants, if he wants a mac then he'll get a mac he didn't ask for your advise on the buy he asked for how to overclock it so if all you are going to do is bash macs and post crap, then please fuck off.

@topic: as emorphien said ocing a laptop is just asking for trouble, heck those things get warm enough to melt anything under them even when not oc'd.

This is why you had to be a REAL overclocker back in the day. I'm not sure what machine It was, but I remember soldering a new crystal, a new IC, and changing several resistors and a cap to go from 8MHz to 22MHz!! Now that was a PITA. After you changed the cap/resisistors and IC, you had to keep trying new crystals until you found the max speed.

Quit shakin' your cane at me old man :p :D

i personally hate macs, i have used them, and they just seem so SLOW compared to my PC (either laptop or desktop, didn't matter)

another reason i hate em, is games, if you don't get my meaning, go to www.redvsblue.com > video archive > apple switch parady and everything will be made clear..............
