Can you help my rig?

I built this rig on a budget hoping to get a systm w/ decent speed and would run newer DX9/DX10 games at decent fr's but it will barely run cod4 with aa turned off and almost all the eye candy turned off. It gets good frs for a few seconds and the halts for a few then cycles again. Ran 3Dmark06 and scored 9194, was hoping for better. Here's the specs
+Phenom X3 8600 2.3Ghz (Meh... brought it cheap on e-bay, figured better than X2)
+ECS GF8200a mobo
+2G OCZ PC8500 1066MHz DDR2 (side note - took a lot of BIOS fiddling but I finally! got it running at 533 Mhz w/ 5-5-5-15 CL)
+BFG Geforce 9800 GTX+, 512MB GDDR3
+Coolmax V-500  (is this the culprit? P.O.S. PS?, says +12V1=18amps and +12V2=16amps)
+Vista 32bit Business OS (kind of a resource hog)

I'm thinking that my crummy PS might be the weak point in this set up and causing the halts but I am looking for any and all suggestions to make this rig pull down some decent frs etc. I am tired of being the n00b that gets Pw3d:D

What resolution you trying to run at?

Acer x223 22" LCD at its native 1680x1050 (also setting in the game), I have tried lower rez but not good results. Should the 9800 GTX+ handle that without raising a sweat? I heard somewhere to try native rez if u were having probs.
Thanks

Just read this on another thread:
"When you are getting crappy performance and reducing the visual settings help, you need a new GPU.
When reducing the visual settings doesn't help you either need a new cpu or the game is very poorly optimized"

Could it be my X3 8600 is the problem? It is one of the earlier ones that apparently had the B2 tlb error issue.

it might be that psu. You should try swapping it out to confirm. Unless your hard drive is completely bashed (fragged), I can't see any other problem with your sig--not when we're talking about a game that's usually friendly to most budget end computers.

the fix is enabled by default in windows, so it shouldn't be giving you weird performance. it should either be all bad or all decent.

Cod4 ran perfectly smooth with my old 5000be and my 8800gts 640 with the graphics at their highest settings @ 1680x1050. And the 8800 is inferior to your 9800gtx+. I would have to assume that your power supply is inadequate for the graphics card's power demands.

Meh... It seems to me that if his PSU was not enough that there wouldn't be a performance issue. Usually you'd see other problems (artifacts, shut downs, BSOD, etc). There is a chance that maybe something is throttling... like your cpu. I know my 9600GT I had ran this maxed at 1920x1080 just fine with my X2 4000+ @ 2.85.

Only other thing I can think of is temps. Does this problem happen in other games or just COD4?

Windows all the way up-to-date too? I know when I just re-installed Vista this week, whenever it was downloading and installing updates in the background it was kinda sluggish.

Also what kind and how old of a harddrive?

You might consider lowering your ram to run at 800mhz @ something like 4-4-4-12 2T. There really isn't a difference between the running your speed and timings vs 800 at 4-4-4-12. If anything you might be able to drop your ram voltage some. If it is your PSU this can help take strain off of it.

Your card should run cod4 great at that res, I got the BFG8800GT and it handles that game very good. I would look else where first do you got the AMD multi core driver installed might try that first. Your power supply looks like it has enough power to run that card if thier not overstating what it will really do, some cheaper units will not put out the power they say they will. Quality power supplies is a very good ideal makes me feel safer if they do go they are less likely to take other components with it, and put out clean quality power to the components at rated specs.

what the hell the tlb bug will not affect you at all the media took it and ran with it it rarely pops up in server environments the problem may be your board / gpu but run the ram at 800mhz the older phenoms did not like 1066 to well

Oh dude never never never never buy an ECS brd unless you dont want your games or anything else to work.Ive returened for my customers MORE ECS that any other brand of brd..even bios updates or unstable at best at times...go with a Good Motherboard Company. Asus, Gigabyte,Asrock, even MSi is better...DFI pwnz :D

i agree i think ecs was a bad choice also. ive seen more of those boards returned then any other. curious why you bought vista business as well.

Thanks for the good tips! I am going to upgrade psu to one w/ better 12v amp output and dedicated 6pin pce plug to see if that helps. I am beginning to wonder about the mobo. Re earlier question, it occassionally hangs in cod2 also (DX9) (esp single player!). And yes Vista is all up to date. Also considering swapping ram out for 4G of 800 Mhz.

One parting question for the night - the mobo specifies HDD support for UDMA/133/100/66 but I have a WD Caviar SE 16 500GB SATA/300 7200 rpm 16MB cache HDD, could there be compatability issues? I am not a HDD whiz, assumed I got a really good fast one and that it was compatable since SATA is supported by the mobo. Is the HDD trying to read faster (300) than the mobo can turn the pages(166) so to speak?

Thanks, this site is a wealth of knowlege!

I upgraded my PSU to a PC Power & Cooling 750w w/ 60a on the single 12v rail. I also added another 2Gig for total of 4 now of memory. I STILL get halts and crappy performance on games like COD4 single player. I just don't know what else the issue could be. Any ideas????

That ECS motherboard is really shitty. Other than that i'd try to install a fresh copy of windows.

Hmmm, multi player stuff runs fine, I wonder if my optical drive is crapping out. Is there a good way to test those?
