Can you help identify this xeon?

Socket 603, out of a dual proc dell machine from a few years back. Its an engineering sample processor so it doesnt follow the normal s-spec naming convention. I think its a 2.4ish ghz at 400 or 533 fsb? The dell board it came on used rambus....I dont have any intel boards in my piles either to try it out with. Is this worth any money?

It's a 1.7/400FSB, C-1 Stepping and it's a Qual Sample. The name of the chip is Foster.

i wouldnt try selling it if i were you, Intel can be mighty irate about people selling those things... its techinically still their property and they can demand it back from you.

They probably wouldn't care about something that is 4 years old and the worst thing that they seem to do is ask for it back. But honestly... it's not really worth much so it might not even be worth the hassle.

Awesome, thanks! If you dont mind me asking, how do you know that? For example, I believe some of the s-spec xeons I looked at referred to the chips voltage as 1.5 1.6 or 1.7......and the guy I got them from swore up and down that they were over 2 ghz chips. (I got them for free so it wasnt a sales pitch)

Could you provide em a link of the complete specs of this processor?

Thanks for the help......I've been trying to find this out for a few years and noone has been able to tell me for a fact what they are....grrrrrr I wish I had a cheapass intel board these would work in to check them out.

Googled the second line of text on the second pic, came up with some ebay selling thing, but it was a 1.7Ghz Xeon, like the guy said, so I think that's right.

Unfortunatly I can't. All the data that I have is on a nifty spreadsheet that I got from work (Intel) that has ALL the old, current and next gen processors and their info. I could probably get into a lot of trouble if I gave that out. But if you need anything else identified let me know.

Bleh, man i wish I could get some proof as to exactly what these chips are before I go pissing away money on a mobo and psu.....I cant get anyones information to agree with one another :(

Well... that's the info that i got from a document produced from Intel and I would think that it would be pretty accurate. Has anybody elses "info" come from Intel? Didn't think so.

lol, no doubt, please dont take this personally .....but this is the internet and sometimes it makes other people think they know what they are talking about. So before I just "take someones word for it" and spend money, I do my best to get the same answer from different sources.

Seriously, I do appreciate you taking the time to respond however.

No worries... you might not realize this, most here do I think, but I work at Intel so that's where I got that info and that's also the reason that I can't give you a copy of it. ;)

im confused as to why you think someone would make up a story about them working at intel, create a ficticious document, and tell you the wrong info...

in any case, that is clearly a socket 603, 400mhz FSB xeon, no matter what clockspeed it is. any S603 board should support it.

Please dont try and start some stupid argument in this thread. I made myself perfecty clear in my prior post.

I don't believe he would intentionally make something up like that just to be an ass, but fact of the matter is he is unable to provide concrete proof that what he is saying is true (and I understand and appreciate why he cannot)......and there is very, very very little information on the web about qspec intel chips on the web.

any S603 board should support it.

and that statement is a perfect example of why you dont just take someones word for shit on the web. :)

yes, i am fully aware you made yourself clear. you dont seem to be aware that i know that, and that i was questioning your logic.

if you dont want help, dont ask for it. forums are about sharing knowledge, regardless of where you got it from. Poncho works for intel, and works with servers. Ive seen tons of xeons to know that that is a 400mhz chip, socket 603 ONLY supports 400mhz chip and there is NO reason for ANY socket 603 board not to post with it. now, if someone comes in and rebutts me with something i dont know about, fine, ill argue it. but you just saying "i dont believe you, someone else, come help too!" kinda pisses me off. defeats the entire purpose of forums.

if you dont want to believe me, fine. do your own research. im trying to help through my prior experiences, and if that needs a link to back it up youre just out of luck.

I don't understand the problem with the statement "any S603 board should support it."

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/res...se7505vb2/technical_reference/32640.htm#E7500

400MHz FSB Xeons work on S603 and certain S604 boards. If the board states it works with S603 CPUs, it should work with your CPU. The CPU isn't exactly valuable. It's just a Xeon version of the Willamette P4 (400MHz FSB, 256KB L2). You can buy a much faster Pentium D 805 plus a 945 motherboard for about the same price of a new motherboard alone for that Xeon.

Foster chips use rambus ram

so I guess I can just buy any old socket 603 board and be fine right?

ram support is dependent upon the chipset. there might even be DDR 603 boards, but im not sure.

Good point, I wasnt aware of that. Do you happen to know what chipsets work with a foster core? The 860 is the only one that I can find.

875s should as well. Something along the lines of an Asus PC-DL supports the 400MHz FSB
