can anyone help me identify this cpu. i got it for free, but it doesnt run in my current motherboard. so im deciding if i should buy a new mobo for myself.

this is what it says on the back.
pentium4
3.2 ghz/1m/800
SL7B8 costa rica
3349A681

my currnt rig:
2.4c@3ghz
1gb ddr400 (5:4in bios)
abit is7.

i know its a p4, but is it any good? is it worth spending money to get a new mobo? or should i stick with my current system? thx

try a bios update, looks like a prescott core cpu, and your using a northwood if i'm reading it right. You might just need a bios update for your motherboard to use it. Not 100% just a thought :p

it's a prescott 3.2. The performance difference between the 2.4@3.0 and the 3.2E probably isn't noticable, though you might have better luck overclocking the new chip, with good cooling of course.

It should work in the IS7, but only with one of the more up to date BIOSes.

i used flashbit and it got the newest bios but no luck. well my fan is pretty crappy and loud, but when i put in the 3.2, the fan got REALLY loud, then my pc shut down. maybe a heat issue?

but it still isnt a big difference? have any idea how the 3.2 overclock? what fan do u reccomend?

if you got it for free, are you sure that it's not just a keychain?

I had the shutdown problem too on my P4C800 Deluxe. I updated my BIOS with a Northwood installed and that solved the problem. Now I've been running on my Prescott for about a month or so with no issues.

sir frag, so you updated bios WITH the chip installed? because i think i flasehd it with the
2.4c.

well anyways, should i sell my curent rig and get the amd64 3500+ 939 socket?

i know somone that wants to buy my system, and for the price i could get a new
amd64 3500+
motherboard
tower -psu,
and another dvd writer.

can i still use my older stuff like

pc3200? i got 2 gb of ddr400.

Yeah, of course. Why wouldn't you be able to?

Heh - I had to do that, too. Only took me 6 hours to figure that one out and 2 hours to go to work and back to borrow a 2.8 Northwood. (Running a 3.0E D0 SL7E4 Prescott)

Is it just me or is everybody geting sick and tired of should i sell my pc and get a amd64 i mean i swear amercian marketing at it best.

Sometime i think the world is full of people that believe everything and follow everybody else like sheep

"Dell Uses Intel Pentium 4 Processors" now tell me that isn't trying to capitalize on name recognition. Im sick an tired of those commercials myself. LOL

uh if im a gamer why would getting a amd64 be sheep like? i want the best performance, and if i can sell my system and get a NEW system that runs better for the same price, why not? im not losing any money.

FINSTA,
the reason why i asked about ram is because i thought ppl were having troubles with amd64 and memory.
