Hello,

I'm more of an advanced computer user, but not knowledgable about memory specifics. I wanted to ask if this memory could be added to this computer. I've popped out a memory stick out of an old computer, its label says:
"Value Select
Corsair
VS128MB100
023401"

Does this mean that it's a Corsair 128 mb stick of PC100? Now, I've got a Compaq Presario sr1500nx. Its mobo is an ASUS A7V8X-LA, and on the Compaq website it says the mobo has 2 x 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets, supports up to maximum 2 GB memory (PC manufacturer's maximum memory may differ), and that it supports unbuffered PC2700/2100 non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory. The website is here:

So will my mobo only accept PC2700 or PC2100? I don't know much about memory. Will it be possible to add this stick to this computer? Thanks in advance.

get the pc2700 cuz if your computer takes 2100 it'll take 2700 for sure but not the other way around

Ok, if I purchase new RAM I will get 2700. But you're saying I cannot add this 128 mb PC100 stick to my Compaq?

do you mean pc2100? since you don't know if your compaq's default memory speed is 2100 or 2700, get the 2700.

if in doubt go higher.

Heck, I got a deal on a gig of 2700 and runs great at 240--not really helpful there.

PC 100
Part Number Speed Size Organization Package
VS512MB100 PC100 512MB 64Mx64 168 DIMM
VS256MB100 PC100 256MB 32Mx64 168 DIMM
VS128MB100 PC100 128MB 16Mx64 168 DIMM

The above table comes from
Corsair's site. The RAM you found is physically different from the current RAM DIMM modules. So the answer is no you will not be able to use it in your older system.

Since your system can support a maximum of PC2700 (166 MHz), you will probably be able to run PC3200 (200MHz) without any issues as well. The RAM will only run at highest speed supported by the motherboard, so the PC3200 will run under its rated speed. This gives you flexibility in purchasing as most deals found today are on the PC3200 variety.

PC100 ram from an old computer will NOT work in your newer computer.

PC100 is SDR, or Single Data Rate, while PC2700 is DDR, double data rate.

The PC100 is old and slow, and even if the machine boots with it in there, the performance will be horrid versus what is possible with the PC2700. I doubt that it would even boot though, so go ahead and buy new stuff. And now that I think about it... is the socket it fits into even the same?

So yeah, new stuff for the newer computer.

Umm.....throw that sh!t away...right now :p
