can the processor in this system be upgraded?

Hi everyone

I figure if I can up the processor in this system to about 1.5Ghz I can get another couple years use out of it...here is the info from
Everest. I'd appreciate if someone could tell me if the processor can be upgraded, and if so what is the max speed. Thanks.

I think the i810E supports up to 133MHz FSB, if i'm not mistaken.

The best socket370 processor you can buy is probably a 1.4GHz Tualatin P3. However, it will depend on your motherboard model if it can support Tualatin chips, maybe with a bios flash.

hah. you obviously don't know that the 1.4ghz Tualatin P3 smokes the alot of the old athlonXP's and p4s. If you can get your hands on a Tualatin P3 @ 1.4ghz at a decent price, its still a very fast CPU.

Erm, no it's not :)
It would be about as fast as an Athlon 1400, or Athlon XP 1600+ (not on this old motherboard with PC66 memory though).
Which is not exactly fast by today's standards. In fact, you cannot even buy CPUs that slow anymore.
And since the Tualatin 1.4 is very rare, it will probably be pricy.
It may be cheaper to just buy the slowest, cheapest Sempron or Celeron system you can find, and it would still be much faster.
 
I can almost guarantee you CANNOT flash the bios to make any gains in processor compatibility. The only question here is: Did Compaq restrict the FSB in the bios to 66mhz? If so, dont bother upgrading, you cant go any further. I also doubt you can get 133fsb out of it.........it MIGHT recognize 100. If so, you can go upto the 1gig range in a Pentium3, or Celeron socket370. The only problem is you wont know untill you try it. Are you willing to try spending the money knowing it may not work? The oem's are notorious for not giving enough info on their equipment. You might find a cheap processor in the FS/FT forum.
I know one thing for sure though...........forget the celeron. If you are going to try it, get a Pentium3.

the FSB speed is controlled with jumpers. So it does look like I can change the speed to either 100 or 133.

Given that, what's the fastest processor I could get out of this? 1.4Ghz? Celeron or PIII? What specific processor and/or socket kit would I need? Since this would be the last upgrade I go to this system I want to get the fast processor upgrade possible.

safe bet is the 1Ghz coppermine. Almost guaranteed to work.

the celeron 1.4Ghz would be a little bit faster.

obviously the 1.4 P3 would be the fastest, but at $135, you could buy a cheap duron/mobo & ram combo that would be faster and more upgradeable.

I'm pretty sure the 810E chipset didn't natively support tualatins. Just because the mobo supports 133 FSB, it does not necessarily run a tualatin. You may need to get a tualtin socket adapter.

I second that... If memory serves me, you need an i815 chipset for a Tualatin, not i810.
 
Getting to the point of your question:

The cheapest & fastest upgrade is:

Celeron 1.4GHz (Tualatin Core) 256Mb cache/100MHz bus $75.00 on Pricewatch.com

FC-PGA2 Tualatin Adapter for Socket 370 FC-PGA MBB $9.00 from http://www.mycableshop.com/sku/FC-PGA2.htm

Total $84.00 will get you 1.4GHz @ 100MHz system bus. The i810E supports 66,100,133MHz bus but only for Coppermine CPU's. You can look at the i810E info direct from Intel here: i810E Chipset Info. You will need the adapter for Tualatin core cpu. I doubt Compaq locked your board down to 66MHz only. I would bet money that your board will run at 100MHz bus for sure & likely do 133MHz too but you memory is rated for 100MHz and the fastest Coppermine I found was only a 1GHz/133MHz chip plus you'd have to buy faster memory which isn't keeping your cost down.

The Tualatin chip would be a better bang for the buck. Regardless of what you do you are taking a chance on this upgrade.

If you want to play it safe you can get the Coppermine Pentium III 1GHz/133MHz FSB for $51.00 on Pricewatch.com but you may need to upgarde your memory because it may not run at 133MHz and I'm not sure if the Compaq bios will allow 133MHz even though the i810E chipset supports it. IF you can look into your bios for any frequency options for memory like 1:1 or 2:3 ratios because then you could keep your memory at 100MHz and have a 133MHz bus processor but I highly doubt Compaq put those options in the bios for you since they try to keep their computers simple & idiot proof.


I am pretty sure you can pull the $84.00 plan off. I ran the same Tualatin 1.4GHz Celeron in my old Abit BE6 (i440BX) chipset. Had it at 1.6GHz (115x14) using a slotket adapter. & that board is like 2 years older than the i810E series. Only supported 100MHz bus & used the older Slot 1 design for cartridge Pentium II/III's.

Edit: Just noticed (re-read posts) your memory does support 133Mhz bus. I would still do the same upgrade for $84.00 rather than a slower Pentium III coppermine just to get 133MHz bus. Also the 133MHz Tualatin chips cost too much. Stay with the Celeron 1.4GHz w/adapter.

Now that I've seen the motherboard you have, I can say you CANNOT use a Tuatulin CPU on that.
How do I know? Thats the motherboard I had in the Compaq(cost me $1300 back-when) I gave to my mother to use. You are stuck with Coppermine CPU's.There were no jumpers in the spot for them......just traces where there should have been. The bios has no fsb adjustment, its all automatic. There also was no timing option for the memory.

EDIT: I dont know what success you'll have with the Tuatulin adaptor, but I know for sure 133mhz bus coppermines ARE supported. I was using the P3 933 I have now in it.
 
Thanks again to everyone who replied. I ended up getting a 1.3Ghz Tualatin Celeron and the necessary adapter. The system's been running for 3 days now, seems to be rock-solid stability-wise. I didn't need to change jumpers or do anything in BIOS; the system made the necessary changes. The BIOS shows the CPU as "Unknown Type", Everest shows it correctly. CPU-intensive tasks have been sped up by about 75%.
 
Although you went with the Tualatin and adapter, you will be restricted by the memory bandwidth: The SDRAM memory on that Intel 810E chipset always runs at a fixed 100MHz regardless of the processor's FSB speed. Thus, if you had a 66MHz FSB Celeron on that Compaq mobo, you still needed PC100 SDRAM because the i810 series chipsets permanently fix the memory clockspeed at 100MHz.
 
And incidentally, if anyone wants or needs a used, working 766Mhz Coppermine Celeron, I'm willing to trade for it or sell it. I figure it's worth $5-$10.
