Can the magnetic part of GPU card support holder affect your blu-ray drive if it sits on top?

so you can see from this video, the magnetic part is quite strong, it can stick to the side of the PC case. Now supposed that magnetic part (bottom) of this cylinder support is where the blu-ray is. Meaning the bottom of that cylinder is sitting on top of a 5.25" blu-ray drive. Would this kind of strong magnet affect the blu-ray drive? damage it in the long run?

why would it, the drive is optical

It could effect the motor if it's close enough. May cause errors in reads if the wires on the optics move through the field fast enough. But I don't think it would damage anything as long as it's stationary.

I wonder what kind of magnet is in that video. If it's neodymium, then it could be a very strong magnet. The fact that the entire wt. of the stick can sit horizontally w/o falling, it must be a strong magnet

Curious, why would there be a 5.25" drive at the bottom of your case, and sticking out so far as to be that close to where that mount would go to hold up the end of your card?
What case do you have that it would sit on top of said BR Drive?

Without getting super technical, the magnetic field is "used up" when said magnet is firmly attached to a material it's attracted to. (steel or another magnet's opposing pole but the latter introduces other artifacts). Those of you remember before LED TVs, it was important to have shielded speakers or your set would be all wanky. The mumetal shielding works the same way.

That said, an optical drive shouldn't be affected by any stray flux.

I have one of these, or the same version sold on Amazon at least. The magnet is not that strong because the whole thing is made out of aluminum and weights next to nothing. The magnet's only function is really just keeping it in place so it doesn't shift around.

so if I put this at my blu-ray drive, a 2 mm padding should do it, between these stick and my blu-ray drive? I don't want to take a chance on my blu-ray drive, as it's an expensive gadget I ordered from Ebay Japan

it's a long story. I'll post a photo in a few mth. when all the other parts arrive and install. I still have 4 shipment coming, 2 of them is at waiting stage as the items hasn't been released in public (so I don't have it neither), I am 1 f the few who knows from the manufacturer as they leak to me in amazon chat what is to come

Again, the magnet is super weak. It will not affect the Bluray drive at all. In the video that person only places the shortest ones on the side of the case because the longer ones tilt and fall off because the magnet is only strong enough to prevent it from shifting around because of any vibrations.

You can also see in the video that the person mistakenly taps one of them while unscrewing the middle sized one and the one he taps almost falls over from just a slight finger tap.

impressive observation. So they are indeed doing a mis-direction and make us think all their magnet is that strong. Well, my shipment is arriving from May 1 to May 8, a weak magnet is fantastic

yup. never even thought of it before, but i have a 12" unshielded subwoofer less that a foot from my machine's hdds, no issue....

That shouldn't generally be an issue -- computer cases should provide a good enough shield that even if the sub was against the case, magnet touching, it would be fine...well, your rusty heads might be jostled from vibration, but otherwise fine. 😅

If your drive was in a plastic case with no shielding, it might be an issue.

that's a good pt. to bring out. I never thought of that. My speaker is a pair of 40 lb. active speaker, but as a coincidence , for now, is blocked by a rack mount UPS, then my PC, in which I have a semi open frame tempered glass, so I guess no shielding there. But in the future, if I upgrade, I would need to watch for this.

So for people who use larger than bookshelf size speaker, say you upgrade to 3 ft. tall speaker , and for that matter, there are HiFi people that put their center speaker at a cabinet, and their pre-amplifer and their mono block and their blu-ray player on the same cabinet, is most of these speaker supposedly shielded?
