i'm trying to install another SATA drive to my PC right now. My boot drive is the 36gig raptor and the 2nd drive is 120 WD SATA drive.

for some reason i cant seem to make it work.. it will show my 2nd HDD to BIOS, but not on disk management or my computer.

here's what i have on my BIOS setup:

IDE Channel 1 Master - Raptro 36 gig
IDE Channel 1 Slave - 120 WD SATA drive
IDE Channel 2 Master - CD-R Drive
IDE Channel 2 Slave - CD-R/DVD combo drive

now on my Itegrated peripheral are all set in AUTO.

can you guys tell me why my 120gig sata drive not showing?

btw, when i took off those 2 cdrom drives, my SATA 120gig automatically goes to IDE Channel 2 Master which works great, but i have no cdroms or dvdrom.

any info or help would be great! thank you!!!
 
You have me confused here.
Your SATA dives should not be showing up as IDE drives as they use a compleatly different channels / connecters / tecnology.
That is unless you are useing SATA -> IDE converters.

Have you installed all the SATA drivers needed for Windozes to see the drives ?

no, i didnt install any sata drivers and no i'm not using any converters.
 
In my BIOS, the SATA drives show up as IDE 3,4,5 or 6 depending on which of the 4 SATA ports I connect them to. Nothing to worry about there, it is still SATA.
Check in BIOS that the ports are enabled.

i installed the sata drivers and that didnt change anything, still shows IDE. what ports are you talking about? i'm not really familiar w/ BIOS much.. and i believe most of my BIOS settings are in Auto.
 
Did you change any jumpers on the drives? If you did, bad user, bad, sata drives are always master.
 
Eh, that is incorrect. Sata drives do have jumpers. THough, they aren't typically for master slave configuration. They usually have something to do with power management, but the jumper block is located just the same as on a standard ide drive and changing them could cause issues.

Looks like if he jumpered his 120gig sata drive like you would a normal ide drive as slave he's using a factory use only jumper on the drive, which could cause unusual problems.
 
this is where i'm getting confuse, i know that SATA is always master.. but how am i going to configure my 2 cd roms I have?

btw, i tried putting the jumpers on and off but no avail.

ill try to read the pdf.. I know i'm doing something wrong here..
 
heh, i tried w/ no jumper and still same result.

btw, my 120gig is at SATA2 and my Bootdrive is at SATA1
 
If I've got the right Mobo manual then "to enable the SATA 3~6 controller, you have to enable the item 'Serial ATA Controller' first in the bios menu of 'Onboard PCI Device'".
A quick test to see if the controllers is working is to plug the working 120 WD drive into SATA port 3 and see if it works when you boot into Windozes.
If it works then plug the new drive into the SATA port 4 and see if that also works.

i think that Onboard PCI device is on AUTO, ill let you know when i get home.. i'm at work right now..

no, they are IDE..

if you need more info let me know.. i dont want to bring this to the shop and get billed by gazillion $$. i know i'm just doing something wrong and i just cant seem to figure what.. :confused:
 
Which Windozes are you running ?

If XP and it is a IC7-MAX3 mobo then in the bios under Integrated Peripherals........

OnChip IDE Device -> OnChip Serial ATA -> set to "Enhanced Mode".
This will switch SATA-1 & SATA-2 to IDE-3 & IDE-4 and leave IDE-1 & IDE-2 for PATA drives.
If not XP leave on Auto.

Onboard PCI Device -> Serial ATA Controller -> Enable.
If you want to boot from a drive connected to SATA 3~6 then enable the SATA Raid Rom as well.

You may have to check that your Raptor is still a boot drive if you have changed any setting in the bios.

thanks, ill try this tonight.. my mobo is the IC-7 MAX 3 and my window is xp.

i did exactly what you said and it was like this:

IDE Channel 1 Master -
IDE Channel 1 Slave -
IDE Channel 2 Master - CD-R Drive
IDE Channel 2 Slave - CD-R/DVD combo drive
IDE Channel 3 Master - Raptor 36 gig
IDE Channel 3 Master - 120WD gig

when i changed the boot up settings, changed to:

1. raptor
2. 120gig wd
3. Auto detect device or something like that.

and it didnt work.. it would hang up when booting up to windows..

But thats what it should look like under XP as it gives you 6 drives not 4.
Where did it hang ?
Check in the Advanced Bios Features -> Bootable Add in Device -> This should point to your onchip SATA controller.

Edit. You've posted 2 x IDE3 Master devices, is that a typo?

ya that was typo, that should be IDE channel 4

but it's working now when i enable IDE Bus Master. that for some reason fixed the problem. it was disable before. :D

Got your PM.

SATA 3~6 are controlled by the Silicon Image PCI Chip.
First check that this device is enabled in the bios.
Then check that the drivers are loaded in Windozes.
If the answer is yes to both you may have to play around with the setting a bit to find which one works.
Also check that the on-chip Serial ATA is set to IDE mode not RAID mode.

You new drive may only show up in the bios in the boot options section.
My SATA drives only show up there.
