Can SAS RAID cards support SATAIII?

I have a number of servers with SAS RAID cards and I want to upgrade the hard drives to larger capacity. I am wondering if they will work with SATAIII (or I / II) drives. The connection looks the same and I have seen reference to this but want to make sure before I take any steps to upgrading. Will they work?

Yes, they will work. One thing to keep in mind is that if you have an old SAS controller, you are still bound by the support of that controller (meaning if it did not support 3TB drives for example, putting in a SATA-3 3TB drive will not work). Also, depending on the card (and the particular version of whatever card you have) may have other limits as well. What kind of servers are they, and what SAS cards do they contain?

The 5i does not support drive >2TB, and has some issues with some 2TB drives. The ServerRAID-8i as far as I know does support 3TB drives.

I have 4805SAS and 8S ( identical, but different PCID).

*4805SAS support 2Tib(not sure about 3Tib, do not have 3Tib drive on hand)on the last unofficial firmware that provided by tech support

*8i/k/s support 2Tib ( not sure about 3T drive), starting from firmware 5.2.0-16001

the nice thing on 8s is IBM still bring the new firmware update tp public for their legacy hadrware, the last newest firmware for 8i/k/s is 2011-12-02

Adaptec does not provide any update since 2008 for 48XX series, the last update on the net is 2008,
I had to contact adaptec tech support for getting unofficial 4805SAS firmware that support 2T (or could be 3T),BUT AS IS..... something broken, adaptec will not support the unofficial firmware :D.

This is good to know. I didnt know they wont support over 2TB drives. I'm currently using 4 Seagate 2TB drives with it and it works very nice after I discovered the heatsink needs to be actively cooled :D

Could you upload or send me this unofficial firmware? I've been looking all over for a solution with this controller and 2tb drives. I've already contacted support, but they're not responding.

I'll never buy any adaptec product ever, that's for sure.

I don't have it, but I believe the firmware that you are looking for is 5.2.0 15617. I don't know if that will help your search.
 
Thanks, I tried searching but only found a bunch of other ppl looking for the same thing.
 
You can call Adaptec. do you have a valid TSID number from the purchase? If not, they'll usually be happy to sell you a service contract for firmware updates that costs 3x what that card is worth :)

I registered the card on their homepage and it automatically gave me a tsid number. I don't know if that's enough or not.

I'll try to call them tomorrow from the office, Thanks.

They may make you prove that you purchased the card NEW within 12 months via invoice etc.

That's not good, because the card was purchased about 5 years ago, and not separately but built into a computer.

try to email/talk nicely, someone would give you unofficial firmware that support 2T (or more? not sure).

It took me on the second person that willingly to give me adaptec temporary ftp links where expired after a week ( not sure on how many days)

I need to find the file first.. and let you know.
or if I have time, I could dump my card firmware to files ( need to find a time to shutdown the server and boot to bootable flash disk).

hold on... and report you back.....

btw, did they suggest to buy their 6XXXX card series when they denied to give you unofficial 48XXX firmware? just my curiosity :D
 
Cards floating around as "new/refurbished-new" should be able to be registered as new IMP, maybe get at least a year or 2 of support?

They didn't deny anything, they simply don't reply to my messages.
 
This is definitely good information. I also have two Dell PowerEdge 2900 at work with Perc 5i and a year ago I thew in four 1TB SATA drives in it without issue. Good thing I didn't get 2TB drives!

I'm using a 2950 with 6x 2TB hitachi drives, without issues. Simple windows file server.
 
All Dell cards except the h700/800 only support up to 2tb drives (can't confirm myself as all our servers with the h700 only take 2.5" drives). Dell has no plans to change that. myself I can confirm that the sas 5i/r and perc5i and 6i don't support over 2 tb. I also read that Dell is supposed to start locking out non-dell drives in the future. They already make the caddies impossible to buy without one of their overpriced drives.

Here are the specifics on Dell >2TB Support http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/w/wiki/2837.aspx Dell goes through phases on supporting firmware locked drives and third party drives, and usually does it on a server family by family basis, and hot swap or not.
 
M76 I have firmware Ibm 8k 16002 from http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=migr-5073646 (450 mb), firmware have only 1,5mb but fw from 8s cant't instal from Adaptec Storage

I try update the firmware from dos, but when i can update firmware AFU show me that my controller is numer 9005:0285:9005:029A, write image is to controller 9005:0285:1014:034D

Any ideas ?
