Thinking about going the Q6600 overclocking route at the moment.

Only thing that puts me off is that in the past any overclocking attempts resulted in a non booting windows, I'm assuming due to registry corruption.

Any hints and tips for basically a rank amateur to avoid this sort of thing.:)

Don't mind having to reset bios, but having to reinstall windows is a pain in the ass and its been putting me off any sort of overclocks.;)

While it may be possible to corrupt parts of a harddrive by overclocking, that usually happens only when precautions aren't taken or you only overclock one part. The registry in itself wouldn't necessarily get corrupt as parts of the partition table could get unstable in result of the bus being out of sync. That being said, i haven't heard anything about anyone's registry getting messed up so don't let me be the one to stop you.

So make a drive image with Ghost or some other utility. Then if the hard drive gets corrupted, you can just restore it. Takes 20-30 minutes max if you use Ghost.

And yes, I have corrupted the Windows registry due to overclocking before.

most newer motherboards lock the pci bus at 33mhz which most sata/ide drives are connected to, while still being able to corrupt your hardrive by oc'ing, its prob not likely.

I've had it happen to me on more than one occasion and I just thought it was odd that I never read about it happening to others.

Different mobo's and different processors have caused the issue.

Probably go with Cyclone's reccomendation and ghost my windows install.

Will get my Q6600 and clock the bejesus out of it.:D
