Can my psu support one gtx 480? Its a ocz modxstream 700watt ill be changing it out soon

Idk if i have the 8 pun connecter or not i only have 2 6 pins and some others im guessing one of the other ones is the 8 pin connecter.

Yeah yeah i know it sucks lol. Im getting rid of it in a few months for a corsair hx750 or 850.

Could it power everything including a full liquid cooling setup too? Im not to worried if i push it to its max cuz i know it sucks lol

What if it pops and it takes some hardware with it? That would worry me.

I'll clarify further how I came to my conclusion because I have nothing better to do at the moment ;-)

Google'd model and hardocp, review shows it can do at least 555W at 80% efficiency in the torture test with acceptable DC regulation and noise. It doesn't sound like it fails catastrophically when it does get overdrawn/overheated.

Overclocked 920 system, with GTX 480, pulling 480W AC at wall. Say they used a super awesome gold sample PSU with 85% efficiency, that would still just be ~408W DC.

~408W DC out of an effectively 555W power supply (more if you've got really healthy internal chassis cooling and temps), gives you a fairly healthy 26% margin.

I have no clue how much a water cooling system eats into that, google turning up nothing quickly on Corsair H50. I doubt it's much, but really no clue.

I sure as hell wouldn't buy it, or recommend anyone buy it, but if I had it laying around, free and ready to roll... I'd rock it.

The 700 watt modxstream will power a system somewhat decently up to ~550 watts. That's plenty for a single 480 and watercooling. As I recall, the modxstream 500 watt and 600 watt are decent and can actually put out their rated wattage, but the 700 watt cannot put out it's rated wattage, and ripple control is mediocre.

Ahhh i never thought about that. But its not the h50 its um a rad 2 blocks a pump a res and stuff so its a real water cooling loop. Would i be ok then? Ill try to hurry up and get a new psu... How do i know if its about to pop?

The PSU is not going to fail. Its main issue was supplying its rated power output at 45C; it was able to do it at 40C. For a single-GPU system, it'll be absolutely fine, even if it isn't a great PSU.

Ok so no worrys then? Ok cool iv got a chance to take a evga gtx 480 superclocked with a water block. And full liquid cooling for my cpu for 425 shipped do you guys think i should take it?

I was looking at the power things for the 480 and it says it needs atleast 600 watts and 42amps. I thought you guys said that it only delivers 552watts?

Power ratings for graphics cards are overrated by ~50-100 watts. You won't pull more than 500 watts in most scenarios, and probably max out at 550 watts with overclocking on both CPU and GPU under simultaneous Furmark and P95.

So like with my i7 920 at 4ghz and overclocked 480 my psu could handle that? Everything in my sig but the H50, im putting the 480 under water and the cpu too. So i will be adding fans to it and then a pump.

Would i be ok?

Yes, you are fine. Adding fans and a pump is like adding a hard drive or two... insignificant.

Ok cool, Do you think i should still look into upgrading the psu though?

A CX500 V2 is enough. I would go with a CX600 V2 or a HX650 if you want modular.

I think I would like that extra room you know? How much would I need for sli 480s? Like a HX1000? or something lol

For SLI 480's, the HX750 is enough. Or a similar 750 watt power supply.

Really? Ok if that is enough then how come people buy like 1500watt psus?

Either they feel they have the need for it, or they're running an overclocked SR-2 (basically two i7's on one motherboard) system with overclocked quad-SLI GTX 580's.

I saw on youtube that 4 480s in sli used so about 1400watts maxed out thats a lot i wonder if my parents would see a increase in the bill if i ran sli 480s...

no. The freezer, geyser and stove use way more electricity especially in peak hours that's when they charge more per kw/h

That 1400 watts is most likely wall draw. If the power supply is 80% efficient, actual draw is around 1150 watts.

Your parents probably will notice an increase, on the order of a dollar or two, depending on how much you game.

Okay, based on my calculations, let's say you game 4 hours a day, 20 days in a month. Assuming the game fully loads up the second 480, that's 1 kilowatt-hour a day, 20 kilowatt-hour a month. At about 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that's ~$2 per month for gaming. Let's also say you idle for 10 hours a day for 31 days in a month. Idle wattage is about 50 watts, so that's 500 watt hours a day, 15.5 kilowatt-hour a month. That's another $1.5, so you're looking at around $3.50 a month, depending on your gaming habits and how long you keep your computer on.

Could you imagine folding the cpu and both gpus 24/7 that would re rediculous.

This is sorta off topic but if i put everything under water, will the rad raise the temp of the room i am in? Im upstairs and both our ac vents have stuff on them which is stupid i know but would i notice a temp increase? I know the 480s get hot...

Yes, you would notice a temperature increase. Watercooling does not reduce the amount of heat put out, it just keeps your components closer to ambient temperatures because it's able to get rid of the heat from the system more quickly.

So for 2 GTX 480s overclocked my 920 overclocked at 4.2ghz, and everything else in my sig plus liquid cooling... Would I be ok with a Corsair HX750 watt?
