Can I use 4+2+4+2 memory configuration with x79?

That's the question.

I know 3x4+2 worked with x58, but that's plain simple 3 channels, with a 6 slot board, this board only has four memory slots, so would it work with 4 modules in 2 channel mode or don't even try it?

I would work, but you would not get the quad channel benefit of X79

On an X79 board with 4 memory slots, each slot is wired to a separate channel. Dual channel mode is only possible using 2 of the slots (Channels B and D iirc). If you use all 4 of these slots with an uneven capacity config, it'll drop to single channel mode.

TL;DR: Don't bother.

Thanks I suspected as much.
