can i underclock a 6800GT?

to adjust it for a 250watt power supply and a 2.6ghz celeron?

im afraid if i run the GT with a 250 watt power supply (350 required) i would crash the computer AND the card. scary. i want to underclock it to make sure that doesnt happen. i really dont want to buy a new PSU or CPU.
 
Seems like a bit of a waste of money to buy a $400 card then make it run like a $200 dollar card. Why not just buy a $200 card instead?

Do NOT just go out and buy the cheapest 400W you can find.

Cheap psu's can lead to A LOT of trouble down the road. Short of not really supplying the constant max rated power (ie 400W). They can lead to fires (has happened to people I know...ahem...darktiger), unclean (nonconstant) power flow (spikes, dips, et cetera). Some of these shortcomings can even lead damaging your hardware.

Honestly, most any power supply should work unless it is one of the smaller proprietary style PSUs. High quality PSUs are cheap in comparison to the videocard you purchased (6800GT). If you do buy a PSU, go for a name brand like Thermaltake, CoolerMaster, PC Power and Cooling, Zalman, or Antec. The quality PSU will stay closer to its max rating once it has reached its normal operating temperature...the cheapies tend to plummet (so a cheapie 400W could only supply about as much power as a good 350W at full operating temp).

The thing about cheaper PSUs is that the rating they advertise is only the MAX voltage they can supply. The longer a PSU stays on, the more it warms up, the more it warms up, the less power the PSU will be able to supply continuously. Cheaper PSUs have cheaper components and poor cooling, and will lose a higher percent of wattage output versus a quality PSU.

Oh course, if you had the money, I would recommend ditching the eMachine altogether and building a rig truly capable of using the 6800GT to its full potential.

As far as if it will fit. You should measure your old one, and compare the dimensions to an aftermarket one. If the picture on the eMachine page were bigger, I'd probably be able to tell simply from the picture or mount hole location).
 
I'm sure theres a chance a standard ATX PSU wont fit... especially with crap like EMachines. My old Gateway couldn't handle a standard PSU but my Dremel convinced it otherwise ;)

I was going to suggest the same thing...but for a guy with an eMachine, I wasn't sure he'd be willing to start drilling and cutting things. :D

Personally, I can make pretty much anything fit with my drill and dremel (I love fiberglass cutting wheels).

Then I'll stand back with self satisfaction and, in the wise words of Groundskeeper Willie,say "It's not pretty, but it'll do." <in my best scottish accent>

Whatever you do DONT DO THAT. You'll be much better off with a good quality 350W PSU than a cheap 500W. A good 500W will run you over 100 dollars. Go to the sticky section of the PSU forum and read those posts. They'll teach you everything you need to know not to make a mistake like that. Specifically, read the DO NOT BUY FROM THESE MANUFACTURERS list.

I believe I found the dimensions... i found this on a non-official emachines site but this should be right.

5.9"W (150mm) x 3.4"H (86mm) x 5.5"D (140mm)
 
thats close enough to my thermaltake to rule out the smaller PSU type.

Now the only problem you'd run into would be screw hole location (easily remedied if it is an issue 3 of 4 should line right up)).

how can i fix that? a drill? lol
 
Keep in mind, some manufacturers use a proprietary connector - meaning if you hook up a standard ATX power supply to the mother board it will not work or could possibly fry things. don't know if this is the case with e-machines, you should ask tech support or make sure you know this somehow before buying a new power supply.
 
Get an Allied 400 watt powersupply or a 350 watt. Allied is great quality for good price. I have an allied power supply my self and mines been running for 1 1/2 year and rails are stable and iv even had it running with my CPU at 800 MHz overclock and it that didnt even stress it. If you got the bucks go buy an Antec.


pr0zac he cant just go and buy the 200 dollar card because that would preform like a 100 dollar product..

This is true, but with the 2.6 celeron it will probably only run like a $200 card anyway, if that. The cpu is a major bottleneck here for that beast of a card.
