I guess you guys jumped to conclusions and thought I bought my computer from a retailer... which is fair I didn't provide a lot of info so whatever. I'll create another post.
Here's my setup:

CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E8500 @ 3.16ghz
Mobo: Maximus II Forumula
Memory: DDR2 6400 400mhz gskill 8gs (4 x 2gs)
Graphics: Radeon HD 4870
Side fan on panel
Can I overclock without blowing up my computer? If so, how much, and how?

Do you know which power supply you have? An overclocked cpu will need more juice. Other than that, you seem to be ready to go. In regards to how far you can go... that is entirely up to luck, or whatever you want to call it. No overclock is exactly like another. Regardless, 3.8GHz or more should be possible.
 
as long as you have a decent PSU you should have no problems.. but remember to start off with your memory multiplier set as low as possible(1:1) so that you remove it as the variable when overclocking..

Could you explain what you mean by the memory multiplier ratio?

How exactly do I overclock? Do I use the maximus forumula II software that the mobo comes with (i remember it coming with it but i never installed it) to overclock or should I just do it straight through the bios? And which settings? I'm not really sure, serious noob here –never screwed with those settings before.

Also, what would I use to gauge whether or not there's a performance difference?
