Can I overclock my 7850?

Hi, I have a Sapphire 7850 and it never goes above 35 degrees Celsius. Without adding better cooler could I OC this card? What is the maximum temperature I should let the card get to?

Also if I were to buy a better cooler for te card, what is the best cooler I could get? (Not water cooling though).

Thanks

What exact model do you have? Your card idles at 35 degrees, when you game it definitely gets hotter (likely 60 plus degrees). 7850s are great little overclockers. You can overclock them well enough. No point in spending money on better cooling on such a low/mid range card. hey don't need much juice so they run pretty coolly.

No i mean when gaming or benchmarking it never goes higher than 35.

Well on the box it just says Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 *shrugs*

There's no way it stays that cool unless your ambients are well below 20 and/or you're playing something like LoL or some other non graphically demanding game. What's your CPU by the way? You could feasibly be veeery CPU limited. But there's no way you can play Crysis at 35 degrees with standard ambients.

I was using a Phenom II X4, but yes it never went over 35 degrees CELSIUS not Fahrenheit. A friend also has this card and it's the same for him too.

So in Celsius what temperature should I not allow that card to exceed?

Most GPUs are fine up to 85 degrees C, so overclock away and keep an eye on your temps with HW Monitor.

Answer the questions I asked. What you're saying is actually impossible unless you are in a really unusual situation (really low ambients, games that utilise the GPU very little etc.). Or perhaps the temperature sensor is broken.

Place your finger on the PCB during usage (preferably under load, say a run of Heaven Benchmark (Google and dl it if you don't have it) and it should be quite warm to touch.

What's the best program to get my card up to it's max temp?

I have used heaven benchmark, and the other one by the same devs, i've used 3dmark (the ones), and it's the same for my friends. I never htought though, that less than body temperature... MMaybe Sapphire Trixx is the wrong program to use.

I would think any 3D application should do the trick. Heaven should be stressful enough to bring the heat. Does the temp still read 35 degrees?

The PCB should feel warn while running through heaven. What CPU do you have? If it's like, 10 years old, it could be bottlenecking you :p But apart from that, the only other option is that your sensor is messed up. Does it ever change from 35 degrees? Try using MSI Afterburner and /or GPUZ.

Overclock until you get artifacts, then take it back until they disappear. Sounds like your temps will be fine. Make sure you are validating those temps across several programs though.

He should figure out the temperature issue before overclocking in fairness.

OK, I was using a Phenom II X4, the card would idle at 30 degrees but never go above 35, thinking about it that does seem very strange. That computer is now a goner, for mysterious reasons. The card is now in my brothers computer, I will run some benchmarks on it tomorrow and watch the temps.

When I looked earlier it was idling at 30. If I ramp up the fan the reading does go down.

My video card stays at 35C under load, but i live in the Antarctic and have a very well ventilated case.

I tested it just now and the temps maxed out at 58 degrees. I plan to OC until the temps get to 70, that shouldn't damage the card and I think it should still last a long time.
