How much higher will my temps be if i dont use thermal paste on my gpu and cpu? (btw the cpu is a P4 2.8c with a DD TDX and the gpu is an ATI9800PRO with a DD Maze4)

does it have any kind of pad anything on the heatsink or block?

You can use a temporary solution. I've heard Mayonnaise would work for three or four days.

then after a cuple days your room would smell like cooked food.

dont mess with the 2.8 just hold off till you get thermal paste

I used the stock thermal pad for about a week until my thermal paste arrived, and then had to deal with the mess of cleaning off the pad and applying the paste. Didn't take me too long, but if i had to redo it I shouldve just waited for the paste...

you dont have to use thermal pste but it is highly recommended. as for cleaning the hold paste off just use some alcohol you can get it at the 1$ store for about 1$. you dont have to worrk about beaing careful alchohol becasue its not conductive and cant hurt it. just dab a little on a q-tip and clean away!

thermal pad will work fine as long as you're not trying to OC much.

I once ran a duron 700mhz without themal paste and temps according to the bios was 32 degrees cent. Put themal paste on and the temp was still the same.

On another computer i had put themal paste on a cpu, a pentium 4 2.2ghz 400mhz cpu when after using it on one motherboard for 2 months I decided to change the motherboard. I had problems removing the heatsink. The heatsink came off with a bit of struggle, unfortunely so did the cpu. Lucky the chip wasn't damaged and the cpu worked in the new motherboard.

you bought watercooling, but youre too cheap for thermal paste....

.....wow. just wow.

The parents comp runs a Duron 1.3 with a GlobalWin FOP-38 7-volted that uses no paste...temps stay in the 40's.

MD4, I was probably where you heard about the mayonaise. It worked well for 2 days...then temps started climbing about 5c a day. I never smelled it "cooking", but it was pretty much dried up after day 4. Remember, only use Mayo if you are in emergency mode and have no paste.

you guys know ratshack, Bestbuy, and any local computer shop has the cheapo white stuff for 99cents, right?

mayo? omg. . .1k-ish bucks and you'll trust it to a food product.

wow

ever clean up a mayonaise mess?
ever clean up a silicone based mess?

mayonaise works great as a very short term substitute. Why? Because it is incredibly moist. Same reason why toothpaste works well too.

I don't understand why one would go to ratshack, pay for white goey crap that is a pain to clean off....when a perfectly good alternative is right in the fridge.

I'd like to see someone measure the thermal properties of mayo, compared to ratshack paste.

Sounds similar to pulling a boat with a geo metro. Sure, you can do it... but everyone will laugh their ass off when your transmission goes out after 10 miles.

I wish I had my old subscriptions back, but from what I remember, I ran a 1700+ without paste and then once with mayo. Without the paste, it was topping out around 60 under prime. With the mayonaise...no case or anything...temps fell to 40 under load and around 34 idle in my garage back when it was cool outside.

tha'ts the best data I can give and I'm not one to make up stories. If I had a working spare socket A mobo, I'd do my best to reproduce data...but I don't.

There used to be a thread before the forum disaster, but I cannot find it anymore.

2.8 with no paste nor pads... gonna hit 70C no probs!

but no worries... as soon as it hits 70C+ the CPU will throttle down...

faced this myself when the HSF's fan not running :D
