Can I drop a drive?

One of my drives is failing. It dissipated from my computer and has just reappeared and windows has warned me it's dying on me. I have a replacement on it's way in the mail. I'm wondering if their is a way in windows to drop the drive and re-add it when the replacement comes to transfer the data. They data isn't that important but I don't have the free space to store it on another drive and I would rather not open up my case, unplug it and plug it back in again when the new drive comes.

If the drive is dieing leaving it powered on may destroy your chances of recovery. That is without the usage of a recovery company. I would unplug the power.
