just updated to the new beta 337.50 drivers and my 780ti now gets coil whine under load.

can drivers cause coil wine. getting ready to go back to old ones to see if it goes away.

If they change the power envelope or other variables then yes they could. Generally drivers increase performance, which in turn generally increases power consumption. Though it would surprise me if it was enough to all the sudden cause coil wine.

Define "under load". Tell us exactly what conditions under which you seeing coil whine where you did not before?

Could be a glitch in the beta, a kink not worked out?

A new final driver update should be out soon.

Have a Watt meter to confirm if it's pulling more juice? Sounds like you're just on the edge.

Elder scrolls online. Bf4 valley benchmark heaven benchmark. Anything that maxes the gpu out. Thats usually what under load means.

Yes I do. When I get a moment again ill have to see if system is pulling more juice.

Its a evga 780ti sc. No manual over clock on it.

interesting something i just noticed its boosting to 1124mhz its never boosted that high before.

Ok, it's confirmed nvidia sneakily brought up the clocks in their drivers. We have our answer, bites in your case though.

With a bit of luck it may go away on it's own eventually. With most cards I've had with coil wine a good 24-48h+ burn-in helped components settle properly.

Yeah i think nvidia boosted clocks in this patch. My 780 SC cant overclock at all over stock usually without crashing and i started crashing in games. I noticed my boost clocks were going to almost 1100mhz at stock clocks now. So i have to underclock about 100 mhz to be stable.

In this case wouldn't you qualify for an RMA since your card no longer works at default settings?

Response to OP: No coil whine is a mechanical anomaly with the components used on the PCB under some particular load. But as mentioned since drivers provide the link between the hardware and the operating system if the clocks or voltage are bumped up high then possibly yes.

1200 watt corsair.

after about 3 hours of gaming yesterday it hasnt come back. im on hour 3 of gaming tonight and no coil wine.

weird.

Yup, there you go. After a "burn in" period oftentimes it goes away. 3 hours is pretty quick.

Poor electrical engineering or fabrication causes coil whine, new drivers can simply uncover the problem if certain things change.

EVGA would tell you to burn the card overnight to see if it goes away, seems to be their official "fix".
