Can cardboard make any static?

Does cardboard conduct any static like if you rub it on a carpet or something? (just want to know);)
 
Everything can hold an electric charge. Static is the results of electrons either leaving or being moved to an object. So say when you rub something on the ground, it can take a negative or positive charge, depending on the number of electrons vs protons, which determines the overall electric charge. Now when something statically charged touches something, the electrons will move to equalize the charges hence the "spark" you see when it touches something. These free electrons (if there are enough) can jump to an electric circuit and fry something which is what most people are afraid of.

Now that being said, the overall polarity of cardboard is probably pretty stable and probably wont hold much of a charge at all. Though I cant say for certain on any scientific grounds.
 
Agreed with above, and would like to throw this out there:

When was the last time you got shocked from a cardboard box?
 
It isnt really a questions of if it will hold an electric charge, it is more of a question of how much it will hold (how many electrons it wants to take or give away).
 
You dont need to feel a static shock when touching components, for static electricty to do damage to your components .. something to keep in mind.

short answer is YES cardboard,paper,wood can hold static electricity

long answer, all insulators can store static electricity and since wood,paper,cardboard are insulators then they can hold static charge

just because you have never had a shock (high voltage, low current) doesn't mean it aint there, humans can only really feel >2Kv (differs person to person) and it only takes 50V to electro-stattically kill electronic components (as found within the PC)

things like thyristors,bjt,diodes arn't suseptible to static death (since these are current-devices). MOSFETS,JFETS,IGBT's.... are!
 
So lets say i had a pc with parts installed in a cardboard box and dragged it across a carpet would it produce static and possibly kill the parts?
 
I work for Solectron, a electronics manufacturing company. So ESD is something I deal with everyday.

You would be fine dragging your cardboard box along the floor so long as the parts inside are contained within anti-static bags. Aluminum foil also works, as basically you need to encase the parts within a conductive barrier or enclosure.

When handling outside of an anti-static bag, any work surface, enclosure, yourself and your clothing (being nude is easiest :D ) or any thing the electronic part may come in contact with all need to be properly connected to an earth ground.

To keep your body in contact with earth ground when working, use a wrist strap with a cord connected to ground (usually clipped the unpainted metal of the chassis your working on). If your in a pinch, and don't have a strap, always make sure you touch the metal chassis to dissipate any charge your body may be holding before reaching in with your other hand to touch the electronics.

Cardboard, should not be used as a work surface has it is not a good conductor of electricity. Neither is carpet, paper, glass, ect.
 
ESD is a little bit over estimated when building PC's

Some main points to consider.

keep your case plugged in, you're earthed through the ground on the PSU/Plug and touching any part of a metal case should keep you earthed.

Never touch the gold connector pins for things liek RAM, PCI-E, PCI and AGP cards, you'd be hard pressed to kill any of these components without touching the gold contacts to a statically charged surface.

Cardboard is a relativly good insulator, it doesn't hold much static charge so you'd be safe storing components on it. Some people I know always earth themselves, use anti static mats and even anti static carpet when building or tinkering with PC's but its really not needed.

Avoid the highly static things like fabric, any components you take out of the bag need to go onto a non-cloth and non metalic surface, just sitting on top of anti static bags is enough.

I've never killed a component with SED, although I have killed parts with coke >.<
