A friend of mine owns a small business and is looking to upgrade his network. His company uses autoCAD mostly and the dwg files they xfer around the network are often 150MB+
I showed him the difference between 100base T and gigi but he wants to know how much traffic is being passed in the network. The only thing that I can show him is in/out from the router, not the internal traffic.

Does anyone know of a switch that can show total traffic in some sort of gui fashion? His budget is ~ $1,000 with around $200 tied up in NIC's

Any switch that can report on SNMP can do the graphing to an external SNMP server.

If you're looking for a reasonable switch I would say look at the HP Procurves or the Dell Powerconnects

You might look at setting up cacti for all SNMP events. It has good network flow stats.
