Can a fan be made to be variable speed?

I just completed my first watercooler, and realized I might have gotten a little bit extreme. I have two 120mm fans blowing air through a double heater core, and while they are keeping the CPU only 6C above room temperature, they sound like a dust buster. I need to lower the noise before my wife kills me.

I figure I have a few choices:
  1. I can do a 7 volt mod on the fans.
  2. I could use some kind of pre-made fan bus (recommendations?)
  3. I could build my own fan speed controller with some kind of rheobus.
  4. Buy myself and my wife some noise cancelling headphones
  5. OR, what I'd really like to do is to somehow (don't know how) alter the fan speed based on CPU temps
    [/list=1]
Any suggestions on what might be the best way to go here?

If it's just the two fans then going to a fanbus may be a little overkill, heres a whole bunch of em just for you to mull over tho.

A pair of these at $3.99 may be just what you need. http://www.svc.com/zaladfanspee.html

Me I use quiet air cooling throughout my case and have 9 fans, in sys all of which are controlled either on my Zalman fanbus http://www.svc.com/zazm1mufansp.html which sounds like far more than what you need, 1 fan is on a thermaltake switch like this one, http://www.thermaltake.com/accessories/FanSpeed.htm and the last two fans are on one similar to this, http://www.svc.com/newfanspeedc.html

Now after considering all that stuff, this is the elcheapo solution, http://test.zalman.co.kr/english/product/zm-muliconnector1.htm I think these can be had for about 2 bucks.

ok $2.75 http://heatsinkfactory.com/cgi-bin/HFAstore.pl?user_action=detail&catalogno=WI-007

If your fans have 4 pin leads, just whack em off and solder them to couple extra 3 pin connectors you got layin around, or just hardwire the multiconnector.
