Can a cpu overclock cause issues with an iGPU working properly?

I'm trying to ascertain whether or not I managed to get a chip with a bad igpu or whats going on.

The short of it is, im using a surround+accessory display set up with SLI. Running 4 displays off of the discrete(s) has caused several issues including the cards refusing to downclock.

I also have some trouble with OBS functioning and figured if i ran the accessory off my igpu i would A) take load off my main cards B) allow them to downclock properly on the desktop C) potentially fix the OBS not capturing the display issue and D) afford me the ability to use Quicksync.

Well i tried quicksync first. In all instances it fails. Crashes in handbrake. Captures nothing but a still blank screen with Afterburner, and with the steamlink, it will start up and run for about 30 seconds at some point it begins to artifact, then crash completely.

I tried with and without it connected to a display. Connecting it to a display adds even more issues. I can start a game and run it on the igpu without problems best I can tell. However most things that use hardware acceleration will crash. It blew up my outlook install I had to dig around to get in to disable hardware acceleration so i could eventually get any office program open.

Last nail in the coffin was running a game and moving between the nvidia setup and the intel screen. It randomly causes a crash which points to the nvidia driver (nvlkddm or some such). I tried several nvidia drivers and several intel drivers.

Also - weirdest of all. If I have no display connected to the iGPU but have it enabled in device manager, if i try to minimize anything on my accessory display while gaming fullscreen, it lags something terrible. almost hitches closed and open. Once its open its mostly ok. All it takes is right clicking and disabling the igpu in the device manager and the problem goes away.

The uefi is set to igpu multi monitor with the PEG set as the main display. voltage/current/ratio for igpu set to auto.

Id love to be able to use quicksync but so far the igpu is all but broken. At least the hardware encoding/decoding part of it. Any ideas?

Newest bios, mild 5ghz oc on water. ~12hr prime avx stable.

I manually set the clockspeeds for my oc back to stock and it showed no difference with the igpu. I didnt want to mess with all the voltages and obscure settings i spent half a lifetime dialing in. Unsure if its being underfed voltage at auto perhaps, no idea how to tell how much its suposed to get, you'd think auto would be adequate for nothing but quicksync but hell if i know.

Even opening something like Adobe Dimension the working area is just litered with flickering corruption. As is the blank OBS screen before a capture is defined/selected.

Any of this sound like it points to anything?

figured it out. Well at least the "quicksync" portion. I now have it working. Havent tried to re enable using the igpu to power the accessory display just yet. Thats next on the list. It was either wholly related, or legitimately crashing due to nvidias drivers where this wont help it either way. Time will tell.

Anyhow, turns out (for those that may run into a similar issue in the future) that on the z370 platform, uncore voltage is tied to cpu voltage. No seperate rail.

Well if i turn my 100% rock stable uncore down ~400 (from 4600-4200 for those that are wondering) it no longer gets garbled and crashes. So stood to reason if i upped the cpu voltage (to my chagrin, i need this chip to last a loooong time) that the issue would be resolved.

The end result is a +.020 core increase from 1.3 to 1.32 to keep 5ghz w/ no avx offset, 46 uncore, and use the igpu for encoding here or there.

I'm on water so the voltage shouldnt make too huge an issue under load. Definately an idle difference but ~35 in the summer is reasonable still.

its a pick your poison thing i suppose.
