can a 765M run games at 1600x900 on max detail

Why the need for max ultra detail?? Just make sure you are using native resolution and if you have to go down a bit on the settings from ultra to high and giving you more fps then that is better.

GTX 765m is a very capable gaming gpu even at 1080p at mostly high settings and native res, but if you want max detail in everything including Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering and still get high fps then you would need a GTX 770M or 780M.

But with your budget of $1,200-1,500 then a gtx 765m or even gtx 760m is perfect

You are aware that that machine is a big 17" beast right? You can get the 765M in the GE60 (15.6" 1080p) for instance for $1250 in the GE60 barebone.

Or we can take the OS off if you have a copy to save more.

The 765M should be able to give you 60fps on most games with high detail (not max detail) at 1600X900 resolution. There's a segficicant difference between the 765M and the 770M so I suggest you save a little more money and get a laptop with a 770M GPU.

NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-765M Review

As the 770M systems tend to have better cooling it should scale very well with some tweaking too.
