Camo Keyboard - A Possibility?

Dear Hardforums,

Ever since I saw this keyboard on Hackers the movie I have wanted to do the same. I want to know if it is possible to camo my keyboard, not a laptop, just a regular keyboard, and how to go about it. I have seen mod guides for a general colour, and nothing else. I was wondering if it is even possible and if I would have to take my keyboard apart or leave it in one piece.

Varies a bit from keyboard to keyboard, but yeah usually.

And it will be MUCH easier to paint while disassembled.
 
I remember the characters only camouflaging the top of the laptops.. But sure, you could paint the keyboard. You're going to have to do some research to see what paint won't rub off. Definitely don't use model paint, I painted a gameboy camo, and it rubbed off where I held it.
 
My first thought would be some form of enamel which is moderately durable to start off with some kind of clear coat finish over top for good measure.
 
Go to the auto supply store and find the paint isle. They make automotive grade paint in Vietnam era jungle camo colors. If it's not going to rub off your Jeep it's going to be fine on a case. They are flat paint too (something you don't see a lot of in automotive grade paints).

If you want modern desert camo you might have to look a little harder.

Personally, I'd prefer the greys used by Nazi's on some of the medium bombers... dark grey with light grey puffs that looked like flak or clouds.
 
Thanks for the help. I guess my only problem now is the paint. If I were to camo a keyboard I guess I would have to paint it with a brush and so keeping to a 'pattern' might be difficult. Would you recommend just doing it by hand (ie no spray) or spraying it on?

Plus, if you know of any tutorials where they actually mod with a pattern I would much appreciate the link as I would like to see how they approach this.

Just find any camo pattern and resize it to taste, then draw a stencil out or something...don't forget multiple coats of paint are a good thing. Plus I wouldn't really recommend doing this on an expensive keyboard for your first attempt, maybe pick up one of those $5 Dell surplus jobs that are all over.
 
i 2nd the try it on a cheap-o keyboard first. when i use to do model kit painting, i would use 3m painters tape (its the blue kind) i would mask off any areas i didnt want the paint to get onto and if i wanted to make a camo paint job, i would use an exacto knife to cut the tape into desired pattern. dont cut to hard or you will scratch the keyboard. theres also parafilm - http://www.2spi.com/catalog/supp/supp4b.shtml its really cool stuff and worth buying off ebay. its like gladware that you cover an open dish with, like turkey or something. and it stretches really well and doesnt let any paint run under it.
 
"Better" hobby shops also sell stencil film for airbrushing. You may want to try that.

Remember, unless you're using something like vinyl dye paint (which is somewhat translucent) you're going to paint over the key labels... hope you touch type very well.
