I'm going to be buying my first USB flash drive soon. I've done a bunch of research, and so far the only thing I know I'm surely going to get is a 1GB drive. I haven't decided on the other features.

So, I ask you, what do you think of the drives you own?
What brand is it?
If you were to buy a new one what features would you make sure you had (encryption, email etc.)?
What features would you make sure it didn't have?

I know most of them are the same damned thing, but I always tend to compile tons of data before I make a purchase.

Thanks for your replies.

I have the Sandisk Mini Cruzer 1GB its fast small.

I love my mini flash drive very handy... I just do simple file transfers from my pc to my friends thats all i use it for.. :p

I have a lexar 1gb
it plugs in, it works

not sure what elese i can say

they *are* all the same really. just a memory chip with a USB interface stuck on it
win2k and xp recognize them w/o drivers

I've had one for a while now, just a 128MB Dell-branded model that work bought for all of us. I don't actually use it all that often, but when I do I have no need for any sort of extra "features." For me, it's just a data repository, and nothing more.

Although I will admit that even though I don't use it, I'd love to get a 1GB model. ;)

Yeah I know, but like I mentioned, some have data encryption, email clients etc. I'm just too anal for my own good sometimes.....well, all the time... :p

I've got a couple ... different sizes ... beats a floppy anytime ... and saves me from burning a CD everytime I need to transport files ... it's handy when you do support ...

I have a cruzer titanium. It's awesome. I used to have a cruzer mini, and I think this is faster.

It's very tough, the usb plug retracts into the drive, and it has a nice blue light.

Plus it comes with a cool utility that syncs with outlook.

Got a free (after MIR) drive from OfficeMax on Black Friday. Dunno what size it is, it's been sitting on a shelf since. What the hey, it was free. Someday I may use it.

had a lexar 512mb, I lost it :(

ordering a new apacer 1gb handy steno in a few hours

I have some Sony thing that is 256mb...that I found in a car I was helping a friend detail (hey, it was a trade-in and with those it is finders-keepers). I use to think that 256 was all that I need one of those things for, but I am now eyeing a 1gb jobber now. Or more if they have them....4gb would suffice.

I still utilize a 64mb DiskOnKey one, there's no need for me to have one larger than that. I use it to store documents and crucial data backup, as well as the occasional "sneaker net"-style networking.

I have a Sandisk Cruzer mini 512 MB that I use every day. It is quite fast, but I am concerned that I will lose the cap since it dosen't seem to be held on very tightly. I haven't tried any of the locking software that came with it.

That's what happened with mine. It did go through washer and dryer, and my data was still intact though!!!! But yeah, I lost the caps (there were a few that came with it), that's why I upgraded to the titanium....no cap.

I use a 512mb Cruzer Micro... picked it up for ~$40 A/R at staples. Really small, and fits well with keychain, highly recommend it to you.

one worth checking out would be the Lexar Jumpdrive Sport model

if you wanna put it on your keychain this is one of the only ones that will be *truly secure* as the cap is rubberized and kind of wraps itself around the whole drive making it super secure.

i also like the cruzer micro as the key loop is built into the device instead of the cap, i fucking HATE the thumbdrives with the key loop built into the cap...i mean wtf...who'd rather lose thier data than thier cap?

I have a Lexar 512MB Jump Drive. I like it alot. The only problem is that it does partially obstruct the neighboring USB ports,a nd on a computer at work it also obstructs a serial port.

As for software I use portable firefox for web browsing

Portable thunderbird for email

I haven't used this but here is a linux distro that is optimized for use on a flash drive

I've got a Soyo CigarPro 128MB. It's not bad, pretty cheap, and seems to be well made. As for realiability, i'm not certain but the chips inside are Sandisk. :)

I've yet to try out data encryption on it. I use mine with many different OS so the encryption utility is useless to me.

Thanks for all the responses. As it would appear by all the different brands you guys have, there really isn't one that's totally dominant. The Cruzer Titanium is awesome, but I don't see one in a 1GB model. :(

I'm probably going to get a Lexar, Sandisk, or Kingston, whichever one I can find on sale when I make my purchase, since it looks like all the big name brand ones are pretty popular and loved equally. :p
