Hiya,

My board (Tyan n300b) has an MCP 55 chipset for the sata controller. I would like to use these ports for my ZFS server but it doesn't seem to like hotswap... I pull a drive and put it back in, but it does not re-appear until after a reboot.

However, when I was running Windows Server it seemed to work fine, but then the controller was in RAID mode rather than the other option (which I can't recall), and ZFS doesn't like this controller being in RAID mode (it actually complains about it).

So I need to know if this is by design or if there's something I can do.
 
If you tail -40 /var/log/messages just after popping the new drive in, do you see any errors like SRST failed? What OS and kernel are you running?
 
Whoops. it's not MCP 55, it's nVIDIA nForce Pro 3400.

I know I need AHCI, but from memory there's only 2 options, one being RAID. I will check and confirm later.

Guess I'm buggered if the other is IDE.
 
I expect you mean you have a 3400b and not a 300b. Can you see during startup if it recognizes the SATA controller as sata_nv or as AHCI? (Obviously you need to have it set to AHCI first in the BIOS). Your board is on the Solaris HCL but not on the OI HCL. Make sure you have AHCI enabled and SATA COMPATIBILITY mode disabled in the BIOS. Have you updated the BIOS to the latest release v2.00?

Yes, I mean the n3400b!

How do I check during startup if it detects the controller as sata_nv or as AHCI? From recollection there is no AHCI options - it's IDE or RAID (I'm in the process of backing up data at the mo so can't reboot to check - should be able to tonight).

Interestingly when I first built my box, I used Solaris 11 Express and pulling drives out that were on this controller didn't work without a reboot.

Am running v2.00 BIOS as well. The way you say "Make sure you have AHCI enabled and SATA COMPATIBILITY" makes it sound like you know it's possible :)
 
Definately no specific AHCI setting. In fact there is no toggle as such - you can disable/enable the SATA controllers, and disabled/enable RAID.

Ah well.
