Calibrating CRT

I finally have my new machine and all is going well.

My new CRT is a March '05 manufacturing date, sold overstock in early '06, very slightly used HP-P1230 22" Diamondtron CRT. It is really sweet.

However, when it shipped they had it on its side for like 6 days. No bumps etc.... but had it on it's side not upright on the base. But seems to be no issues from that - can this cause problems in theory?

Anyways, no scratches, no obvious fadings, etc... But I am a noob when it comes to computers and monitors - this is my first high-end rig. How can I properly adjust and calibrate my CRT screen? It is a little off - but seems to just need adjusting. However, the "auto" function on the monitor is not perfect. I still need to adjust the squiggly stuff and auto just seems to center it but not do the "trapezoid to rhombus to square" kinda shaping function - that is on a different part of the menu,

Is there any perfect way to center and shape the screen or is it all just by feel using the monitor buttons? Any way to test if your magnets are unaligned or anything is wrong that you need service with? Luckily, because this is so new I actually have 2 more years of HP after-service warranty with this and the original owner is happy to facilitate me using it if I need it!

I've never had to calibrate a crt. other than minor tweaking the contrast etc....
just a little quick googling..I found some test patterns... is that what you are looking for?http://www.radioham.tv/testpatterns.html

As far as the centering and shape... I've just done that manually.... It seems to change sometimes when change the resolution...

Thanks. What you have done is always what I have done in the past. But this is my first elite rig and I am really noobish with computers. I was hoping there would be some program to make sure that I calibrated right or to reassure me that my monitor is working as well as it seems to be since I did by it slightly used.

Nokia Monitor test... google it. That's about as good as it gets

Or DisplayMate, if you are willing to spend some money (between $69 and $99 for the end user editions). I have DisplayMate Video Edition, and I highly recommend it.

You can look here for more info on the software and on how to order.
