I searched and found solutions but none of them work. What next?
I have 2 HD, both WD. The one I use for my OS is 40GB and the other one is 160GB. I recently wanted to install windows to the 160GB drive and only use that but it would always install windows and then hang when trying to boot into windows. I tried all the steps like fixmbr and so on after reformatting it incase that was the problem. It still wouldn't boot if set as the primary drive. The 40GB works fine for booting so I am still using that. The thing is that I have been using the 160GB as a storage drive and never had issues writing or reading to the drive. I still can use it to store my music and play it of the drive all day.
The 160GB drives goes through POST etc and hangs right at the XP startup screen. It is detected fine in BIOS and in device manager. Everything is in 'DMA if available' mode also.
Using the WD diagnostic utility I get this error "Cable Test: Read diagnostics sector error". I have the 2 drives on the same IDE cable and even my 40GB drive gives the same error. I switched the IDE cable out for a brand new one, same error. Another brand new cable and the same error still comes up for both drives. Jumpers etc are in correct position. CHKDSK gives no errors. I only have one IDE slot on my mobo.
I can't run the WD test because of the above error so what should I try next? I can RMA the 160GB drive as it is less than a year old still.
