Cable management on non-cable management friendly case

So I was bored waiting for something to arrive from UPS today and decided to try to do cable management in an Antec Sonata III case. As you all know this case only opens up on one side having no access to the other side.. so I removed the front panel and decided to not use the filter and try to get some cleaner cables.

Here are a couple pics, sorry, camera phone:

Picture with the front case removed, routed the wires that would need to go through that spot.

Second picture shows the front of the case is back on, damn IDE cable making it look sloppy.

Final picture with everything hooked up, no wires in the way, it looks good enough to me.

Morale of the story? buy a case that is more cable management friendly :|

I had a case that was very similar in design to this one (I had the Cooler Master 534). Then I "upgraded" to the Antec 900, and it has even worse cable management!

maybe rounded IDE cables could help
Looks like a fiarly easy project with a steady hand.
Seen a nice mod to make those same ones there rounded just Google for "round-ide-cable-guide"

Actually, a round IDE cable wouldn't help that much.

What he really needs is a SATA DVD drive, which wouldn't be that much more expensive than a round IDE cable.

Well that's true with the new DVD drive, I assumed he/she wanted to work with what they had.

Flat IDE cables are easier to route out of the way than rounded ones because you can fold them. The only purpose of round cables is for aesthetics.

Well basically with the mod I mentioned they are just folded over about 6X and just wrapped.

You can try this:

What I do is use one of those tiny swiss army knife. I cut very lightly about 5cm in the middle of the IDE cable (in this case it is a floppy cable) and do the same on the opposite side. Repeat till it cuts through clean and they will separate easily as you pull them apart.

Once the floppy cable is separate in half repeat the process over on both halves till you have about 8 stands (forgot how many I would do on an IDE cable).

It is much easier to route than the bulky round IDE cables and not as ugly as the regular ribbon IDE cable.

On cases that aren't cable friendly, I put the dvd drive in the second from the top bay, put all excess wires up in the top bay zip tied to the 3.5"metal rail. On the flat cable, try to run it under the dvd drive to the front of the case and it should be able to "slip" in between the front of the case and the main structure (pic1 - near the hdd bay). You could also clean it up further by turning the HDD around and putting cables on the blind side of the case-no wires exposed.
