Just got all my parts and I have a question. Someone told me the the C2Q Q6600 processor already had something like thermal paste on it and that I did not need to use thermal paste as I have in the past when installing a processor. I haven't put a computer together in a very long time and have been outta the loop on things. So my question is, does the C2Q Q6600 already have something on it or do I or should I use thermal paste? I don't want to screw this up.
 
The CPU doesn't come with paste on it...your heatsink might have however...

Thermal paste on retail products is usually gray, but could be blue. You'll want to ensure there's something on either your processor or your heatsink that doesn't look like metal :)
 
If you're using the heatsink that comes with a retail Intel processor, then I believe it is preapplied to the heatsink (three grey stripes on the bottom). If the bottom of the heatsink is just shiny metal then there may be no themal interface material. There definitely isn't any on the chip itself.
 
If you buy the retail chip, the included heatsink has thermal paste. It's 3 gray strips if I remember correctly.
 
Ok yes it's there. And I just told my friend he was full of crap about him telling me what he did. I think I was expecting a little tube or something of thermal paster to be in the box. LOL I feel like a dummy now. But thanks for your replies.
 
Well, for a few bucks you CAN get new thermal paste which does wonders over the stock stuff.
 
Don't use the stock paste on a Q6600... Stock cooler is bad enough, but you really should put some other paste in there.
 
They have some nice air coolers for like 50 bucks or so.
The highly recommended TRUE (thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme)
Another good cooler is the Tuniq Tower
Beats the TRUE Noctua NH-U12P
And then the cheapy Artic Cooling Freezer 7 ( like 20-30 bucks)

all of which way better than stock intel cooling
 
I have the Xigmatek S1283 and recommend it. Got it for $37 at newegg. Reviews show it is right there with the TRUE. I don't have a TRUE for comparison, but it smokes the stock heatsink.
