Hello,

I build the setup in my sig about 2 weeks ago and I decided to give overclocking a shot today only to discover that, as far as I can see, I am only able to hit minimal overclock. I mean, I cannot go over 294FB, or 2.94GHz.. I upped the CPU voltage to 1.4V, MCH voltage to 1.6V and I was worrying upping it up more since I do not know much about overclocking C2D.

Do you have some insights about the particular motherboard I have? I think this setup should go way higher as the person whom sold me the CPU said that this chip was able to hit 3.6-3.8GHz. I most probably do something wrong but, well, I don't know. Are there some feature to "off" to unleash overclocking? So far, I am a bit disapointed. I paid a premium only to find that it is a pitiful of a chip. I know I know, with overclocking YMMV but well, I was expecting something different.

Any help appreciated

Up cpu volts to 1.45-1.5V
Update to the latest bios
Are you running 1:1 with RAM?
Up RAM voltage to 2.2-2.3V

Bios is 0408. It is not the latest but I have to stick with this one since the lastest give some errors with my CPU .. (ES not recognized).

RAM was set to the lowest value to remove some of the bottlenecks. I will try upping the voltage more to see what happens.

I've got a B1 stepping E6700 ES. I don't understand why yours won't work with a newer bios? Mine did max 4.0 on air and would bench at 3.95 with 1.5v. Below is running 1.62v on single stage phase (home built) ;) I'm using a DFI 975 X/G board with the 11-15 bios. My cpu isn't maxed but the board just won't run over 460fsb with the X10 multi :(

With the latest BIOS, the computer works "fine" but I always get a message error stating that the microcode of the CPU is not recognized by the BIOS. I have the option to press "F1" to continue booting. Once windoze loaded, it works just fine. It is annoying to see that message everytime you boot. I was about to sell that ES chip and get a retail one due to this but I stepped (spelling?) back to the previous BIOS and it worked. I will wait for another BIOS revision from Asus to see what happens.

I will try with 1.5V then. It seems as per what you say that I was not giving enough juice. Worth giving a shot, before giving up.

EDIT :

Oh, you have one marvel of a chip Boshuter

As long as your cooling is ok and the temps are in line, 1.55v sure won't hurt it.

I did try 1.5V and it is a no go. I remember however have seen the BIOS boot screen getting "corrupted", you know, all the text messed up, at 294FSB or so. It reminds me at the time where the PCI bus could not run at a fixed speed (33.33MHz) and that it was too much for the IDE bus to handle. I know for sure that I ran my PCI bus at 33.33MHz since I did select that option in the BIOS but one thing bugs me is that I am wondering if the PCI-X bus is running at a fixed speed too. That would make sense but if it is the case, then I am screwed with overclocking since I am running a SCSI setup based on a PCI-X controller plugged in one PCI-X slot. I could try a SATA HDD or simply move my SCSI controller in a regular 32 bits PCI slot. Who knows..

boshuter, do you happen to have the WS Pro motherboard?

Hmm... not sure about the pci x, I do know that you need to run the pcie gpu slot faster at high fsb. I run mine at 115-120, but most of the time if you set it to 101-105 it should be ok.

No, I'm running a DFI 975 X/G board right now.
