C&C Generals going slow

I have a 3000+ athlon 64 system, with an Abit (i think its a KV8), Radeon 9800, and 512mb of pc3200. I ran 3dMark 2001 on this computer (under windows xp), and i had a score of 14590 with resolution at 640x480. When i go into C&C Generals zero hour, play single player with 7 computer players, the computer lags badly, almost enough to match what my 400mhz PII did on 128mb of ram.

This computer plays doom III perfectly on the highest graphics settings, only lags when data is loaded from the hard drive. Farcry and Theif III with 6x anti-aliasing and every graphics option on the max works smooth as well.

settings the priorities to low on other things, and realtime on the main generals files helps a little. But mysterious exits also come along when the game is run for hours on end, and the temperature wheeter is set to 50C. The temperatures are usually 100 degrees idle (room temp 75), and no more than 120 full load (farenheight).

Is this just a problem with generals, or is something wrong?

I can't say for certain, but I think it can be narrowed down to a memory issue. You may have something eating up all your ram in the background.

Generals.dat uses about 300mb, and it says its using 200mb page file. Is that what is going on? But if so, i thought DOOM III would suck more ram.

Generals is pretty horribly coded in terms of performance.

I used a few tweaks to speed up my Generals dramatically; I'll see if I can dig them up.

Sit tight, amigo!

yes i need those too :D i heard its slow when u have alot alot of things because it saves the whole game for a replay. when i have alot of thing it lags on mine with my comp specs.

I've never run into lag problems with Generals on the computer in my sig. I've run it, primarily on LAN, in games with up to 6 or 7 players and it rarely hiccoughs. Have you tried re-installing? You shouldn't need to tweak for an RTS to run decently...

yah it doesnt lag really with just LAN, its win u put computer teams in there. Its just not with this stsytem, its on my friends, and the last to computers i had before this one.

Are there any patches/tweaks to make this game more usable?

The problem is the AI routines use alot of processor time, plus the processor has to throw all those polygons out there and run all the background stuff! That's alot to ask for a processor! Even a kick-butt processor like an Athlon64. A P4 might play better when running so many CPU opponents. Also more RAM would more than likely help out.

And yeah, C&C Generals is not the most elegantly coded game out there, I'm not surpised it crashes after a long time. I've had that happen to me as well.

I never had a crashing problem with Generals.

I do remember that the game has an internal frame cap and when I removed it, the game ran just fine.

I have asked someone with 1gb of DDR400 ram and a 3400+ athlon 64. They say it still lags horribly with a lot of players, even in lan games.

Edit:

I disabled Virtual memory in windows, ran C&C Generals. The computer did not crash from lack of ram, i still had about 100 megs free. It ran a little bit faster, but still like i was using a Cyrix processor.

yah i never run out of memory :D but shit it still plays a little slow when theres a crap load on one map in a LAN and some comp players in there too

I went into display settings, and set the OpenGL and whatever the other thing is called to "Perfomace". So it overides the games settings and sets everything for speed. The game does run fast with up to about 4 computer players. When things are getting action-packed, it still slows down.

I just hope the next version of C&C is better.

this is a game issue. also happens to me and a friend's a64 pc. this only happens on large maps. been trying to fix this since they released the last patch to no avail.
