bytecc usb to ide adaptor problems

I just bought a BT200 Bytecc usb to IDE adaptor. I can't get this thing to reliably work with any Ide device. apparently from reviews Ive been able to find this seems to be a problem with most of these and other brands adaptors. Does anyone out have an experience with one that works with all drives? I really would like to find one that is worth buying. I have tried every jumper postions on all drives and cd dvd devices I even used a power lead of an Antec true 480 Psu to elminate any power issues, nothing helped.
 
The power cord (between the brick and the wall) that came with mine was very cheap and shorted out inside the cord at the brick end. Until I figured this out I was having difficulty keeping a drive running with the adapter...lots of clicking and restarting. But sometimes, after swapping the cord, the drive would still restart for seemingly no reason. IANAEE, but maybe you problem could be the power coming in from the wall. Since the bytecc adapter is rather inexpensive, it might not be tolerant of dirty power. I now plug mine into a UPS and haven't had any problem since then.

How much stuff you have running off of that circuit? I think, in my case it was a power issue. I rent a 100 year old house that uses questionable electrial wiring (not origanl to the house) and a 15 amp circuit supplies three upstairs rooms. I got the UPS to keep my roommates hair dryers from blowing CBs, but it seems to have also fixed by external drive issues. YMMV.
 
as I mentioned I used one of my power leads off of my Antec 480 thus eliminating the power adaptor as the source of the problem. I checked the 5 and 12 volt leads with a multimeter am getting a good 12 and 5 so power is not the issue. This thing appears to be broken, but as I said i haven't read a lot of good things about these products.
 
Sorry I thought you were refering to the black power cord. Didn't mean to piss you off by trying to help.
